The Pottsville town council has accepted an invitation to attend church next Sunday, signaling a communal civic faith event for the town leadership.
D. S. & S. coal train collided with a Lehigh Valley freight near Weatherly at 10:10 PM Saturday. Engine 9 and seventeen gondolas were derailed and burned. crews escaped with no injuries. Property losses exceed 28 thousand dollars for the D. S. & S. and are heavy for the Valley line. Officials from both roads will investigate to determine responsibility.
Retail Liquor Dealers Union of Wilkes Barre adopts resolution to close on Sundays and not display interiors. It demands curtains drawn at all times and warns violators will be prosecuted under state liquor laws and punished by publication of names of noncompliant dealers.
The Scranton Municipal League and Police Day helped drive out many saloons with sixteen licenses canceled in Scranton and several in nearby towns. Rehearing petitions from Pittston hotelmen await full court review. Also, Pittston power firm cuts lighting rates effective April 1 due to rising business. In the county floods at Heidelberg mine Avoca David J Davies descended 310 feet to repair blocked buckets and return safely. Mine Foreman Alex Law and Nicholas Morgan also entered Erie Company shaft to measure water depth but nearly drowned after the carriage descended under water before a rescue signal cord brought them out. The engineer responsible is reported prostrated.
