Fourth Week of Conflict Expands Union Strike Actions
The fourth week of the anthracite strike began with engineers, firemen, and pumpmen ordered to suspend work unless eight hours are granted. In Lehigh region operators largely refused the eight hour day, and most mines reported workers kept away. Markle & Co. and Coxe Bros. mines faced suspensions, with boiler rooms sealed and water rising in some shafts. Clerks at Drifton were fired for refusing to work in boiler houses, while Hazleton saw a surge of deputy arrivals. A separate enforcement action led to arrests of three men for illegal fishing, and Patrick Harvey of Pottsville died, with funeral arrangements set for St. Ann's Cemetery.
