A preliminary injunction halting county commissioners and Wilson J. Smith, awarded the courthouse contract, was granted. Taxpayers' Association members, backed by Controller George R. McLean, contend the price exceeds lawful limits and the plans omit key features, totaling over a million dollars. A permanent injunction hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
White Haven resident Jerome Williams reports his bay mare and carriage stolen from his stable last Friday night. He has no trace or direction for the robbers. The mare bears a white star on the forehead with black forefeet and white rear feet.
A lightning strike on an abandoned mine slope near Pittston caused a mine gas explosion, killing Eugene Hodgen who was seated nearby. Bricks and debris flew as the blast occurred, fracturing Hodgen’s skull. The report also notes a violent arrest scene at Pittston and other local incidents including theft of a coal yard and Socialist and Republican political developments.
In Edwardsville two women, Annie Yanis and Mary Peacee, anticipated marriage with Michael Segaris. Yanis filed breach of promise for $10,000 after learning of a planned wedding to Peacee. Segaris was jailed. later he was transported to Yanis's lawyer with a constable and Alderman Perkins pressed the knot, while Peacee took no action.
Stephen Page a tea agent traveling from Hazleton to Freeland was robbed Saturday afternoon of goods valued at 4.20. The thieves loosened the box straps between Ebervale and town and stole 10 pounds of butter 4 pounds of coffee 1 pound of tea and half a pound of gunpowder. Page did not notice the loss until delivering goods to customers.
Isaac Reinbold, a Barnesville pumpman near Mahanoy City, was found dead by the Philadelphia and Reading Railway tracks near a crossing yesterday morning. With a wife and five children waiting at home, locals suspect foul play though a small wound on the head is the only clear mark. Authorities pursue a full investigation into the death.
