Deer Checking Stations Provide Long Range Deer Data
Biologists from the Department of Environmental Conservation recall 25 years of deer checking stations building a 24 year yardstick to gauge deer herd trends. Data from hunting camps and roadside stations track age, antler size, weight, kill location, and date to assess winter foods and range quality across 10 ecological areas and county units. More deer lead to stressed food supplies, while adequate winter feed yields better antlers.
