Oats as Crop Returns Fall Short for Many Farmers
C Delmar Kearl of Cornell University notes that even after accounting for straw and pasturage, oats yield a loss of about 60 cents per bushel. He argues the crop often fails to cover costs, making land rental and idle resources hard to justify, with yields well below the 44 bushel average on Cost Account Farms.
