President Roosevelt urges 54 countries to keep armies at home and form a nonaggression pact to remove weapons enabling attack. He stresses air power and fortifications must yield to collective defense, hoping for a peaceful world and mutual restraint among great powers.
The president sends a plan to Congress to spend 3.3 billion dollars on public works to reduce unemployment. Critics question funding methods, proposing use of new money that would retire later to avoid annual interest costs, arguing the nation is off the gold standard.
John D. Rockefeller Jr. sponsored Diego Rivera to adorn Rockefeller Center. Rivera praised communism and painted Lenin in a prominent wall, but the mural drew controversy. He was paid in full and dismissed when Lenin was removed.
The Florida senate passed a constitutional amendment exempting homesteads from all taxation up to five thousand dollars. The measure, sponsored by Representative Dwight L. Rogers, moves to Florida voters at the next general election. Congratulations to Florida.
A naval board of inquiry finds error by the Akron commander contributing to the air ship's loss and suggests possible change by President Roosevelt, commander in chief of the Navy, to the antiquated rule.
County Attorney J B Wieser led efforts to re establish Gillespie County Court by Texas Legislature act signed by Governor Miriam Ferguson on May 6. The law grants the court civil and criminal jurisdiction and aligns district court jurisdiction, fixing court terms.
Gil lespie County boys left for Camp Bulls at San Antonio to enter the refor estraion work funded by the U S Government. Names include Alonzo Friedrich Wille A Schneider Charles Wubray Carl K Eddy and others. Each applicant must pay their own transport to the recruiting station. the government covers all other expenses. Mr C J Dooley and the Chamber of Commerce helped with transport to ensure arrival in San Antonio.
Mrs A W Keller 1860 medical stroke Sunday died Tuesday 7 am at her home in Brady Texas She was born in Mason County and lived in Mason Fredericksburg and Brady She survived by five children two sons Felix and Francis Keller three daughters S J Striegler K D Steffens and B J Crowley two grandchildren great grandchild two brothers Louis and Chas Kettner and one sister Mrs John Gamel Funeral Thursday at 4 pm at the Striegler residence with Rev Fred S Rogers presiding Interment in Brady Cemetery
The Louis Jordan Post American Legion schedules Memorial Day services Sunday May 28 at 3 p.m. in the Public School Auditorium. The program includes scripture, prayers, roll call, choir, Memorial Day address, clarinet solo, talk on tree dedication, and benediction with five trees dedicated to Eddie Kaiser.
The Portland Cement Association releases a free Texas highways map showing 3000 miles of concrete roads and surface types to help motorists choose routes. It promotes “Travelaxation” and offers to mail the map from Dallas plus economic tips on building and maintaining concrete highways.
Father Heckmann presided Tuesday morning May 23 uniting Leo A Wallendorf and Rosina Klein in marriage. The maid of honor was Thekla Wallendorf, best man Alfred Klein, attendants Rita Klein Viola Klein Hugo Klein and Edwin Steitle. A reception followed at the bride’s mother home. The couple will reside near Stonewall. Congratulations were extended for a happy married life.
The notice lists closing dates for Palo Alto Meusebach Creek Stonewall Albert and Rheingold schools with Saturday or Sunday dates in late May and early June. Mr Charles Kott traveled to Waco after leaving Sunday to join the Waco Cubs as a player, accompanied by his parents Mr and Mrs Hubert Katt.
Brady Turks defeat the Giants 1 to 0 in a short tightly contested contest. Brosig pitched a near no hitter with Red Klaemer delivering the lone fourth inning hit while Hugo Klaerner’s teammates were unable to capitalize.
The Guadalupe River bridge celebration is delayed indefinitely after committee discussions with local business leaders. They favor postponing until county highways are fully completed per State Highway Commission plans, so no event on May 30.
The Texas Legislature redraws districts placing the Hill Country into a single compact district. Gillespie County citizens will see their congressman more often as residence proximity improves contact. West Texas gains at least two new districts while East Texas loses influence. The Standard records the wedding of Professor W. C. Westerfeldt to Myrtle Mathisen at the Mathisen home with Rev. R. Gammenthaler officiating. Attendants were Mrs. Fred Mathisen and Professor Charles von Rosenberg. Miss Mathisen has taught mathematics at Fredericksburg High School. Westerfeldt led history and coached athletics.
St Marys Fredericksburg announces Sunday night graduation exercises at 8 o clock in 1st Josephs Hall to close the term. The program includes grammar school certificates and performances by students Andrea Kaiser Ruth Brannies Sophie Jenschke Isabelle Lang Dorothy Pyka Evelyn Knopp Alois Jenschke and others with diplomas conferred by Very Rev A Heckmann and address by Mr Felix Stehling.
Relatives and friends gathered Friday May 19 to celebrate the twenty firth wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Willie Schumann. A feast followed by an address from Rev Paul Leonhard and songs by the Alpert Male Choir marked the event.
Mrs August Juenke Sacouraay died at a local hospital May 186 at 10:30 morning. Services were at the family residence conducted by Rev A Koerner. interment in family cemetery near one residence. Born Nov 23 18 2 to Mr and Mrs August Kott of Wolf's Creek. age 60 years 5 months 25 days. Married December 14 1892 to August Juenke. he died January 18 1920. Surviving: six children including Arno and Raymond Juenke. daughters Mrs Charles Roeder Mrs Louis Kunz Mrs Alfons Feller Mrs Edgar Klein. four sons in law and one daughter in law. brothers Albert and Emil Kott. sisters Mrs Louis Wahrmund Mrs Wm Henke Mrs Adam Stehling. 15 grandchildren and one great grandchild. A brother Ernst and sister Mrs Karl Petermann preceded.
Mr and Mrs Mathew Pyka and relatives attended the golden wedding anniversary of Mr and Mrs Frank Pyka at Bandara on Sunday. Miss Bertha Metzger left for San Antonio after visiting her parents Mr and Mrs Adam Metzger.
The relief committee has secured funds for relief and will put eligible men to work as soon as they are eligible. Every person on relief lists must report to the Relief Office before starting work. The measures respond to changing business conditions and some men may have found jobs elsewhere.
A petition signed by over one hundred residents seeks a county election to decide if cattle and horses may run at large in Gillespie County. The Commissioners Court will schedule a vote within thirty days. if approved, livestock may be barred after a further thirty days. The sheriff or constables may impound livestock and owners may be charged fees. sale of impounded stock may occur after notice. Cattle on Fredericksburg streets noted.
On May 18 at 7 30 p m Rev Theo Haag joined Rev Louis Hannemann and Miss Viola Klett in marriage at Bethany Lutheran Church The bride wore heirloom ring presented by her father Albert Klett Attendants included maid Ruby Klett best man Arthur Rode and attendants Mary Louise Peacock and Arnold Wiedemann Mrs Max Beckmann accompanied by her husband sang I Love You Truly and played the wedding march A reception and dinner followed at the Klett home The newlyweds will reside in Palmer Iowa where Rev Hannemann leads a Lutheran congregation
Local bank will be closed Tuesday May 30 in observance of Memorial Day. Regular operations resume Wednesday with usual hours.
The second inoculation of toxoid will be given Thursday June 1st at St. Josephs Hall. Parents of children in Gillespie County who have not been treated should bring their child at 1 30 P M to register for the first inoculation. Lions Club and Ladies Auxiliaries will arrange for the second inoculation free of charge at St Josephs Hall or a local physician on a later date. The effort honors twenty or so Lions and Auxiliaries for four years of service to immunize every child against diphtheria.
Four unmasked bandits and a red headed accomplice held up the First National Bank in San Marcos using a submachine gun and pistols. They robbed five employees and a customer, taking 7040 dollars before fleeing in a black Buick toward the hill country. Walter Kellermann, Bertram Thomas, and Payton Taylor were abducted but released unharmed near Blanco Bridge and returned to work within half an hour.
Oliver Wuest age 11 son of Mr and Mrs Clemens Wuest was bitten by a copperhead on Saturday morning while playing in the yard. He was promptly taken to a doctor and experienced no serious effects from the bite.
