About 35 prominent Gillespie County young men prepare to report for service at Camp Travis in San Antonio. A farewell dance at Klaerner’s hall Thursday night saw the group bid farewell to sweethearts and friends amid patriotic wishes. Gillespie County Over the Top in Red Cross Drive

Gillespie County residents quickly surpassed the Red Cross quota on the first day with a total of 363.78 dollars. Campaign chairman Adolf Goud wired the result to the district committee and received congratulatory telegrams from leaders in St Louis and Houston praising the county’s response as the drive continued through May 27.

War Savings Visit To Foster Victory In Gillespie County

Fredericksburg will host F. R. Senor Field Director of the War Savings Committee from Washington. He will instruct residents on saving and buying War Saving Stamps to support the war effort. Senor, an earnest speaker and organizer, will announce a date and invite all Gillespie County citizens to attend a grand rally for his talks. The visit may last several days with the last day set for a countywide gathering to explain financial war issues.

Fredericksburg High School Commencement Schedule

The Fredericksburg High School commencement will be at Klaerner's Opera House on Monday night May 27 with an interesting program. The intermediate closing exercises precede the event on Saturday night at the same venue. A special service for the graduating class will be held Sunday night May 26 in the M E Church South led by Rev. Rischer. Patrons and friends are invited. further details will appear in the next issue.

Deaths in Gillespie County and area funerals

Mortuary notices report the death of Anton Jung age 96 in Gillespie County after a short illness with survivors including brothers and sisters. His funeral was at the Catholic Church with Father Gerlach officiating and burial in the Catholic cemetery. Also noted are the deaths of Eloise Marie Knoehe at 19 days and Harvey August Staats at almost two years. Eloise Marie’s services were at Union Cemetery with Rev. Glatzle. Harvey Staats’ service was led by Rev. M O. Puhl.

Raid on Wolves Ends in Wolf Den Kills

Messrs T J Ratliff and Ernest Ricketson, residents near Enchanted Rock, visited town Tuesday and reported a raid on two wolf dens. Ratliff killed seven cubs about fox size and Ricketson three. The mothers escaped but may meet the same end. Wolves and goats can’t be friends, and the men are ensuring the wolves vacate the country.

Army recruiting station lists 1918 draft registration changes

May 20 1918 Houston station reports passage of a bill requiring men 21 or older since June 5 1917 to register on June 5 1918. After registering they cannot join the Regular Army as volunteers. All branches open except Aviation Section. Six hundred May applicants blocked by prior registration would have gone to France. enlistees are sent to France as transports allow.

Two Bikes Stolen and Recovered From Outhouse

Two bicycles belonging to Walter Klaerner and Lawrence Knopp were stolen Monday night. The wheels were found the next day in a small outhouse at Harper and later returned to their owners. No suspects or clues have been found.
