Austin June 13 The Social Security Board urges claimants to provide proof of age for lump-sum old age claims over 100 with the birth date on file or birth records. When proof is difficult to obtain, the applicant may use Bible family church and other records. Lump-sum payments equal 34 percent of wages since 1937. Beginning 1942 monthly retirement checks will be issued to qualified workers or their estates.
Allen Durst suffered a painful laceration on his right leg from the ankle to the knee when he leaped into a water-filled hole while playing near East Austin and North Elk streets. The accident occurred as City Water Engineer Alfred Neffendorf was tapping a dead end of the city water main near Jim Ruff's residence.
Congress quickly approved the wage hour bill setting minimum pay scales and the $3.753 billion spending measure for work relief and public works. Both await Roosevelt's signature as flood control debates delay adjournment. In foreign events, Japan pushed into China while Spanish rebels captured Castellon de la Plana and Grao port, widening fronts.
Mrs. A. O. Willman assistant state service officer will be in Fredericksburg Saturday June 25 to receive applications for veteran compensation. The event is under the Louis Jordan Post Amer ican Legion at the Palace Theatre Legion Hall second floor. Gold Star parents urged to apply and others encouraged to file on this day.
Otto Bass aged 50 died in a three vehicle collision on the Fredericksburg road two miles from Kerrville. A second man, about 60, was in critical condition and Herbert Brown, 29, of Legion, suffered severe cuts and bruises. Bass’s companion was riding with him.

A Llano blaze Monday at 3 am heavily damaged the Fry Motor company in the main business district. The fire destroyed the building owned by Mrs. J W Davis and all equipment including 14 automobiles, one new. Cause not determined.
Marvin Hall the state fire insurance commissioner said reductions averaging over ten percent will save Texas insurance buyers about 2 1/2 million dollars annually. The cuts take effect June 15 1938 and do not apply to premiums already paid. They target properties with the largest premium volumes such as dwellings mercantile buildings and farm property. The St Marys High School alumni held their ninth annual reunion at Enchanted Rock on Sunday June 12. Attendees met at St Marys School at 9:00 am and traveled to the Rock. A lunch followed under shade trees by Sandy Creek with afternoon dancing ball games and socializing for the 1938 graduates honored guests.
A new electrical appliance store will open in Fredericksburg next week after remodeling of the Standard Service Co. offices and display room. The Standard Service and Appliance Company will operate in the same building as the current garage and be owned by Wm. Schroeder Jr and Al Maas. Schroeder to run the service and car department. Maas frequent Central Power and Light salesman in the area. The store will offer General Electric domestic and commercial appliances plus air conditioning and heating units for Gillespie and surrounding counties with opening details to appear in next week’s papers.
The Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual meeting and banquet Tuesday night June 28 at 7 30 at Hotel Nimitz. Robert Lee Bobbitt chairman of the Texas State Highway Commission is invited as guest speaker. Invitations extended to all Highway Commission members and several chambers. Tickets mailed to members and guest tickets on sale at the Chamber office.
One of the largest reunions in Gillespie County drew 850 people at Jaerner's Park last Sunday. Legionnaires, their wives and children enjoyed barbecue, lemonade, and coffee as the American Legion Orchestra played. Col Webb of the Legion Hospital spoke, and a business session set a biennial reunion for Klaemer Park on the second Sunday in June. Alfred Neffendorf led the day’s program as Post Commandant.
On Monday June 13 Arthur Stehling was admitted to practice in federal court taking an oath before Judge Robert J. McMillan in Austin Texas. He plans to seek admission before the Supreme Court in Washington DC.
Gillespie County Commissioners Court granted Pedernales Electric Cooperative a franchise to construct and operate electric transmission lines within the county. The action authorizes poles wires insulators transformers and all attachments along streets and public places. Similar franchises exist in all six counties where the cooperative operates. Applications and easements from prospective recipients continue to be received daily at local offices in the Palace Theatre Building.
The Farmer Boys League will award a silver loving cup to the season champion. Palace Theater manager Walter Knoche announced the prize and the cup will be displayed in the theatre lobby.
Giants overwhelm Luckenbach Farmer Boy's League Club 13 to 0 at Fair Park as every Giants player notches a hit. Eckert collects twenty hits in the game with two home runs, two triples and a double, while E Klaerner goes 4 for 5. Al Enderlin earns his fourth win allowing five singles. Next Sunday the Giants face Fat and Forty Straits Frank Team of San Antonio at Fair Park.
Amarillo June 14 three persons died in a blaze at an apartment house as 2000 firemen attended a state convention. The deceased were Mrs C W James W L Thompson Jr 16 and Donald Ray Thompson 4. Mrs Thompson leaped from a second story window with a seven month old baby and broke both legs while the infant suffered critical injuries. The father had bruises and severe burns. The building was destroyed.
Lee Ferguson aged 60 was crushed under a tractor and killed instantly at his home seven miles northeast of Farmersville Texas on June 11.
