Lady Bird Johnson Park popular beyond expectations

Gar land Taylor reports Lady Bird Johnson Park exceeded early hopes in its first 30 days with about 2500 visitors over Memorial Day weekend. During one 30 minute span 40 cars entered. many out of state plates observed as staff note profuse favorable comments and ongoing 24 hour duty to support visitors.

Bloodmobile to Visit Fredericksburg on June 20

The Red Cross Bloodmobile will be in Fredericksburg Friday June 20 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Community Savings and Loan Community Hall. Sponsored by St Mary’s Parish and led by chairman Harry Hartmann, the drive aims for 88 pints with Mrs Benno Jung as general volunteer chair. Hartmann warns demand is high and urges donors despite vacation season.

Utilities Group Cites Waste Water Plant at Southwest Texas School

The City of Edinburg and Pearsall along with Fredericksburg were cited for Most Efficient and Attractive Water and Wastewater Plants at the 12th Southwest Texas Water Utilities Short School. Edinburg won for both water and wastewater plans. Pearsall for water plant. Fredericksburg for waste water reclamation. Over two hundred attended. twenty four earned Certified Operators certificates.

Peach JAMboree Set for June in Gillespie County

Plans advance for the Eighth Annau Stonewall Peach JAMboree on June 20 and 21 led by Simon Burg, general chairman, with Texas Peach Week proclaimed by Governor Preston Smith. The event opens with a Friday rodeo and includes a queen selection from Gillespie County residents. A new peach recipe contest joins Saturday’s parade, bands, and drill units.

Austin Couple Dies In 290 Highway Crash

An Austin couple Mr. and Mrs. James C. Jones both 78 died in a three and a half mile west of Fredericksburg on U S 290 Thursday morning but their bodies were found Friday evening. State patrol estimated death at 11 a m. and determined the time from a stopped car clock. The couple had been reported overdue in Pecos and were the subject of a safety department search. The crash site was near the former Klaemer Park Station.

Gillespie County Residents Visit Governor Monday

Fredericksburg and Gillespie County residents joined citizens from the 12th and 24th Senatorial Districts for a reception at the Governor's Mansion in Austin. Guests included Mayor Sidney Henke Commissioner Pat Pyka City Attorney Pat Dooley Judge Victor Sagebiel and state lawmakers as hosts Governor and Mrs. Preston Smith led the event with Senator J. P. Ward Senator David Ratliff Representative Gerhardt Schulle Representative Pat Nugent and members of both districts’ legislatures.

Gibson to Open Full Line Store in Fredericksburg

Work began on a new Gibson Discount Store building in Fredericksburg across from the old Pioneer Furniture site on U S Highway 290. A $45 000 city permit was issued to Gibson Products for a 90 by 120 foot concrete block structure built by C E Farr Construction of Abilene. George Harris of the Kerrville Gibson Store said Sam Dolgener would manage the Fredericksburg outlet, aiming to open by the start of the fall school season.

Gillespie County Farm Bureau Plans HQ at East Main Street

The Gillespie County Farm Bureau has been issued a $1,500 building permit to renovate and convert the former El Gallo Mexican Restaurant at 425 East Main Street into their new headquarters. The work will upgrade the structure recently purchased for organizational use.

Texas Hunter Jumper Show Opens at Gillespie County Fair

The 8th annual Hunter and Jumper Horse Show runs Friday night through Sunday at Gillespie County Fair Grounds. Over 150 contestants and as many top Texas horses compete with stables from Houston San Antonio Dallas Austin Waco and local riders like Rafael Joseffy Becky Jung. Performances begin 5 30 pm Friday 6 30 pm Saturday and 1 30 pm Sunday with free admission except season box seats and grandstand seating.

Texas Water Rights Session Set For Monday in Fredericksburg

The Texas Water Rights Commission will meet in the District Courtroom at 2 p.m. Monday to discuss the Water Rights Adjudication Act effective August 28, 1967. Tim Brown will cover legal aspects, and Robert Hensley will explain Section 4 Recordation Claim requirements to protect surface water rights. The Gillespie County Bar Association sponsors the event with local committees and County Agent Menzies.
