Henry A Meier of Luckenbach sustained a compound fracture of his left leg Tuesday afternoon when kicked by a horse while herding to the pens on his ranch. Meier was riding behind several horses and was helped by neighbor Mr Lebine. He was transported to a local hospital by ambulance.
Andrew McKinney, government trapper, exterminated twelve Texas Red Wolves in the Enchanted Rock region northwest of Fredericksburg over the past week. Nine cubs were found in a cave and three large wolves, some with missing legs, were captured in baited traps. one alive wolf was released to Henry Hohmann’s pack before being disposed of. Ranchers plan to keep him on the job amid reports of more wolves and panthers in the area.
The Hill Country Livestock Protective Association will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, June 7, at 3 30 p m in Gil leapie County Courthouse. President Alfred Cameron announced the gathering to discuss officer elections and other business with members urged to attend.
Rainfall in Gillespie County during May was generally light though some regions saw higher totals like 2.96 inches near Harper. Fredericksburg recorded 1.4 inches for the month, far below 1946 and 1944 levels, with May temperatures swinging from a cool 50 degrees to a hot 95.
Burleigh Grimes will head the New York Yankees try-out camp at Fair Park on June 16 and 17 with Wattie Holm and Ernest Dutch Lorbeer. The camp features Grimes, Holm and Lorbeer, all noted major league veterans, with Grimes’s long pitching and coaching background recalled.
Sheriff department logged four weekend crashes with no critical injuries though vehicles sustained heavy damage. Roddy Miller's car struck Calvin Brerwthwale near Bowie Street and Mason Highway. Bobby Harris overturned on South Bowie Street. Set Willard Chasteau ditched on the Austin highway after breaking through fences. H W Barnes escaped injury when his car overturned on Bell Mountain. Gillespie County still reports no fatalities for the year.
Congressman C Fisher told the 21st District postmasters in Fredericksburg that eternal vigilance is the price of peace. He warned against decadence within and urged continued support for peace terms, honoring over 800000 who served. The convention at the Court House also set Del Rio as the 1948 site. Heimann named Lions Club president, takes office July 1.
Texas legislator Tom Martin of the 5th District said he is seriously considering a bid for Congress in the 21st District. While on a visit here during a legislative recess he said he had been approached by delegations from many parts of the 27 county district and would run if interest persists.
Gillespie County ranks 99th nationwide in peanut acreage from the 194% Census of Agriculture figures. The county reports 7,514 acres planted for peanuts, part of Texas’ 491,202 total acres in the state’s top 23 counties. Comanche leads Texas with 66,629 acres, while Saba and Mason rank lower in the national list.
An appreciative audience attended the annual memorial program sponsored by the Leis Jordan Post and Auxiliary in memory of Gillespie County's war dead. The event took place Sunday afternoon in the Public School auditorium with the auditorium decor by auxiliary members.
The three day Gillespie County Fair Association meet capped Sunday with Cat Play and Ruler dead heating the mile and seventy yards in 4 minutes 56 seconds. J B Carrick owns Ruler, Jess Barker owns Cat Play, with Bull, Sister and Half and Half following. Other Sunday winners include Double-Action in the Jaycee Handicap and Bay Eagle in the VEFW Handicap. Saturday features saw Marendalla win the main race in honor of Miss Jackie Richardson, with Snare Drum claiming the American Legion Handicap. A Saturday dance celebrated the night, drawing many locals and guests aligned with the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce.
In the first four months of 1947 Gillespie County residents bought 113457.25 in all U S Savings Bonds. Most purchases were in Series bonds totaling 88593 75 with 24643 50 in Series F and G. A 35000 objective was set for June and July promotions starting June 1. Captain and Mrs Robert Fotis and daughter Sue left for Mississippi after visiting Mrs Fotis mother Mrs Felix Lehne and relatives.
The Giants defeated the Stonewall Pirates 12 to 4 at Stonewall before a capacity crowd. Skipper Klaemer pitched well and Giants collected 15 hits, seven for extra bases, building a 10 2 lead by the sixth inning. Bonn led with four hits including two doubles and two singles. Next Sunday Dan's Cafe visits Fair Park to face the Giants on Jimmie Pyka Field.
