Concert To Aid Courthouse Park Improvements

A big concert is set for Sunday night June 15 to raise funds for Courthouse Park improvements. Local volunteers plan lawn care, tree trimming, bench repairs, flower beds by school children, and tennis courts in the southwest corner. The event aims to beautify the park area outside the building limits.

WPA Salvage Plan Adopted Countywide Drive To Be Made for Iron-Rubber

The county votes to scrap drive for iron and rubber under WPA nationwide plan. Judge Hirsch and WPA engineer plan county participation with a salvage committee across precincts. Farmers receive reply cards listing potential metals and whether equipment is needed for collection. WPA trucks and labor will assemble scrap for shipping.

Gillespie County rationing board says helpers will serve those未previously accommodated for canning sugar next week Monday through Friday. August 25 Final Filing Date For Independents

County and precinct office candidates on the independent ticket must file by August 25 per Vernon statutes. A petition signed by five percent of last general election voters and a citizenship affidavit are required. Seven candidates have announced: three for sheriff Klaerner Moritz Loth. two for Commissioners Tasch Olfers. two for County Treasurer Jenschke Loudon.

Legion Holds Memorial Service For Fallen Men

Legionnaires of the Louis Jordan Post observed Memorial Day in the Public School Auditorium on Sunday May 31 honoring 52 World War I dead. A saluting firing squad and taps by Edgar Kamlah marked the ceremony. Flowers and a poppy field were arranged by Legion Auxiliary members and placed on graves in Gillespie County. The post pledged future cooperation on World War II memorial services.

Avengers of Pearl Harbor Week Proclaimed in Fredericksburg

Mayor Joe Molberg proclaimed June 7 to 8 as Avengers of Pearl Harbor Week in Fredericksburg. Observance starts Sunday at 1 25 p m marking the attack’s six month anniversary. Army and Navy recruiting officers will lead nationwide drive for new recruits.

Gillespie County Tops May War Bond Drive

Gillespie County residents contributed 18450.59 in War Bonds and Stamps in May surpassing the initial 14000 quota by about 4400. The total breaks down to 17466 in War Bonds and 984.50 in War Stamps with June’s county target set at 17300. Legion Plans July 4 Events In City

The Louis Jordan Post of the American Legion announced plans for the July 4 observance. A parade is planned for Saturday afternoon July 4 followed by a program at the Fair Grounds and a dance at Seipp's Pavilion. Entries are encouraged from individuals and groups. no merchant prize money.

Second Installment Income Tax Payments Due June 15

Taxpayers who chose quarterly installments were mailed notices this week. The second payment is due June 15, after first due March 15. The remaining installments are due September 15 and December 15.

Mass Meeting Set for June 13 on Rail Line Abandonment

A mass meeting in Fredericksburg Public School Auditorium Saturday June 13 at 4 p m will decide the fate of the Fredericksburg and Northern Railway line after the Interstate Commerce Commission approved its abandonment except it may be sold to buyers within 30 days. Citizens must act to preserve transportation links with Gillespie and Kendall Counties and fill all seats.

Breakfast To Open Scout Drive June 11

A breakfast at Hotel Niemitz on Thursday, June 11, at 8 am will open the Boy Scout Drive for funds. Dr. Lester Keyser, chairman, announced the one day campaign to raise money for financing the county scouting program for the year. Gene Autry Visits Gillespie County Kids in May Inning

Gene Autry stopped briefly in Fredericksburg on a Austin to Mason trip drawing hundreds of Gillespie County children and adults. He posed for photos, sang briefly, and promised to return, as Manager Walter Knoche arranged the surprise stop before continuing to Mason and beyond to Big Spring.
