Three essential elements govern dairy farming success. Strong cows that convert farm feed into milk and butterfat economically, proper feed and care ensuring efficient production, and access to a reliable market for dairy products. All three must be provided to avoid near certain failure. hogs and poultry can boost profitability when butterfat is sold and skim milk feeds them.
Root crops provide a preserved winter feed for small dairy herds. Mangel-wurzels yield the most per acre, with beets turnips and carrots as alternatives. Turnips should be fed after milking to avoid flavor changes. carrots help color the milk.
University of Missouri guidance outlines grain supplements by milk output for Jerseys Guernseys and 4% cows on blue grass pasture. It recommends energy feeds such as corn oats barley with protein supplements, and notes sudan grass as salvage pasture to prevent fall slump.
New York State Conservation Department posts a vast plan to reforest over 4 000 000 acres within twenty years.
