Gillespie County Chapter seeks 301 washable color bags 15 by 12 inches with drawstrings for hospitals by March 15 to Bureau of Supplies. Donations of finished bags or materials welcomed. The central West Texas drought eased as a rain began Saturday night and continued through Sunday. Falls ranged from a half to two inches, aiding stockmen and farmers across the county, with some western areas receiving slightly less. Telegraph reports indicate the rain extended from the coast to the panhandle and will be of great value to the region.
Gillespie County Chapter of the American Red Cross presents a recital at Klaerner's opera house on Saturday night March 2. Miss Laura Arhelger reader and Miss Ruby Hatcher pianist headline. Proceeds fund hospital garments surgical dressings and knitting yarn for American soldiers.
The February term convened in Fredericksburg with Judge N. T. Stubbs presiding. Grand jurors sworn include Otto Henke Otto Kramer Henry Sauer Peter Land and others. Several cases continued or resolved include a murder verdict not guilty in State v Moehle and various civil matters. future proceedings to be published.
The State Department and the Food Administration issued urgent pleas for ships as Hog Island yard investigations delay vessel production. William Phillips urged ships are needed to transport troops, while Herbert Hoover warned food conservation and production rely on ships to move supplies to Europe.
Frank Freeman aged 23 of 418 San Hernando Street was found shot in the Steves Lumber Yard in San Antonio. He died from a back wound and the case remains a mystery. Freeman’s body was taken to Riebe Undertaking. funeral at the family home at 3 o’clock with burial in San Fernando Cemetery. He leaves a widow and young daughter, his parents Mr. and Mrs. John Freeman, two brothers and a sister. Police heard a gun shot earlier that morning but no clues.
International News Service describes escalating German shelling in the American sector near the front. American batteries now face 700 to 800 shells per day with Krupp guns concentrating to support German lines. Air activity continued as three enemy aircraft roamed. a flare-dispersed group in No Man's Land was repelled by barrage. Casualties included one infantryman killed and three artillerymen lightly wounded.
Fire Sunday morning destroyed the Lometa light plant eighteen miles west of Lampasas Texas. Thirty five barrels of gasoline exploded in the flames. The plant owned by F C Whitmire had no insurance.
Henry A. Kolle died at the Alice Hotel from wounds after being shot on the sidewalk in front of the Albrecht saloon Saturday night. Fred H. Albrecht, saloon manager, is jailed after being arrested by Constable Hudler and Deputy Gerber. examination is set for Wednesday. Kolle, 33, was a local farmer, son of Mr and Mrs Fred Kolle, respected in the county.
Washington officials await confirmation that Turkish and Bulgarian troops are being sent into Belgium. If true the move would have grave consequences for the United States and could justify an immediate war declaration against Turkey and Bulgaria.
