The Red Cross local chapter, meeting in the courthouse, will push safety and first aid this spring and summer. Plans include highway first aid stations near Fredericksburg with two attendants trained for recognition. Classes for first aid will be held with doctors and Red Cross officials as instructors. Textbooks are being provided to local Boy Scout troops and sales offered to citizens. Leo Berg of the National Red Cross outlined the program.
A Rural Electrification Engineer will visit Fredericksburg on February 23 at 2 30 PM in the County Courthouse to discuss starting a Gillespie County project. Farmers and farming residents are urged to attend to learn about organization, costs, and rates and to have questions answered. 4H Grote County Agent awaits progress toward sign-up.
The state funds disbursement details show public schools receiving 3 per capita that day plus 2 more per child on March 20, totaling 12 per scholastic from a 22 per season apportionment. With 1,560,660 scholars represented, payments reach 4,681,980 this month and 18,727,920 for the 1937 38 season, leaving 15,606,600 due by Sept 1.
Walter London announces his candidacy for mayor of Fredericksburg in the upcoming City Election on April 5 1938. A lifelong resident he is well known to voters and pledges to perform duties faithfully without fear or favor.
The new crop control measure, replacing the outlawed AAA bill, passed Congress and was signed by President Roosevelt. It allows the Agriculture Department to set quotas and payments to farmers who plant within limits to balance supply and demand. The act requires two thirds farmer approval for quotas and aims to keep prices fair for both farmers and consumers. Also reported are calls to boost emergency relief funds for Dust Bowl areas and Navy production delays affecting destroyers and carriers Enterprise and Wasp.
Harper was admitted as a member of the Farmer Boys Baseball League at a Cain City meeting of last year’s members. The league will be five teams with Stonewall Cain City Listerdale Seipp’s and Harper. Otto Seipp was elected president Willie Herbert vice president and Alois Jenschke secretary treasurer. A Cain City meeting on March 3 will set policies and the 1938 schedule. Alfred Sauer underwent an operation Monday.
Orden Sime of Readstown Wisconsin to perform on Monday evening at Bethany Lutheran Church using theremin and other instruments. Otto Baganz leading US harpist to play February 24 at Holy Ghost Church with his children on Vibraharp and Marimba at Doss Lutheran Church. No admission charge. Public invited.
Harper High School won the county basketball title over F H S Hillsbllies 16 to 8 in Fredericksburg. Gammenthaler scored eight for Harper with Peril adding seven, Nixon led Fredericksburg with three. Harper advances to the district tournament in San Antonio.
Carpenters this week removed the gallery of the White Elephant Saloon, a relic of bygone days. The building, now owned by Kurt Keidel, previously housed an auto accessory store. interior work has not yet started and future uses are not announced.
The annual 4 H Club and Future Farmers Fat Stock Show will be held here next Saturday February 19. The event, sponsored by the local Chamber of Commerce at the fair grounds, will be supervised by County Agent Grote and Norvell McCauley. Judging begins at nine AM with Mason County Agent Frank Newson judging the animals. Prizes totaling 100 will be awarded the exhibitors. An Auction Sale is set for 1 30 PM with M F Pyka as auctioneer. Breeders of registered stock may exhibit but no judging or prizes. Exhibitors include Harold and James Henke Arthur and Frank Pressler Clinton Sidney Floyd and Charles Grona Harry James and Jasper Danz Dick and Jack Laurence Fred Koennecke Ellis Nixon Victor Hohmann Elton Durst Walter Frederick and Leroy Fuhrmann Erwin and Elgin Friedrich and Roland Schmidt. County Agent Grote says the animals compare favorably with prior years.
The Fredericksburg Implement Company will sponsor a free moving picture show The All American Choice open to everyone all day Saturday February 26. The event is on the second floor of the building they occupy above the showroom.
Plans for the District Conference of the San Antonio District Southern Conference Methodist Episcopal Church run March 3 to 6 with 26 charges represented by pastors lay delegates retired ministers and women's mission groups. Leaders in attendance include Rev L J Rode Bishop Charles L Mead Dan C Fischer and Rev G C Brannies among others. Conference will feature churches from Austin Brack en Brady West Sweden Copperas Cove Decker Manda Flashing Circuit Fredericksburg Freyburg Georgetown Gonzales Hilda Hoersterville Hutto Industry Haw Creek Lexington Caldwell Lyford Mason Art Monthalia Moody Paige San Juan Schertz Schulenburg Seguin Taylor and San Antonio churches.
W. E. James of Travis county visited Fredericksburg on a political scouting expedition. He was accompanied by friend Mr. Conn of Austin as part of the statewide inspection effort.
Texas Fire Insurance Commissioner Marvin Hall announced that effective March 1 Fredericksburg will again receive a 15 percent fire record credit. The credit stems from the five year fire record period and city losses versus premiums, rewarding better fire prevention and lower premiums for policyholders.
A fire of undetermined origin threatened Turner Hall on Wednesday night. A cigarette stub reportedly lit kindling in the saloon area, potentially scorching the northeast room before firefighters arrived. Estimated damage near $150. the building is insured.
Miss Josephine Stahl of Santa Rosa Hospital will take an active part in A Night In Good Old San Antonio a benefit play presented tonight to aid a new nurses home in San Antonio nearing completion.
