Gillespie county reported a 95.92 percent tax collection rate for the period ended with heavy totals: state 18850.50 dollars, county 35957.31, road bonds 2953.12, and school taxes 21294.48. Poll receipts fell slightly from 1938 to 1939 with 3698 issued, noting continued penalties for delinquent taxes.
Local health officers join Dr Geo W W Cox in urging Gillespie County residents to vaccinate themselves and their children against small pox to prevent spread though no cases are reported locally. Cox notes past state cases and urges vaccination at least every five years stating smallpox mainly affects children under 14.
Texas reports a 57 percent drop in road deaths in 1938 along 19 high death corridors. Official figures show 134 deaths compared with 315 the previous year on these high risk segments. Homer Garrison Jr. notes Texas relies on concentrated patrols on deadly road sections to save lives.
The City of Fredericksburg was granted $17,088 by the Federal Government for the City Distribution and Power System. Mayor Edward Krauskopf said the PWA provided this in addition to the $45,000 original grant to match city funds, totaling $62,088. With a previous $100,000 bond issue, the city now has $162,088 for building the system.
Two fugitives escaped Kerr County jail on October 27 and were recaptured in separate Texas cities. Herbert S. Leverett alias Herbert Butler and C. O. Colston alias T. O. Mills had long Texas and state records. Leverett held in Houston for burglary, Colston arrested at Abilene for a Ballinger burglary under a false name.
Clifton Arhelger 17 broke his right hand in several places while cranking a tractor during plowing. He received treatment at a local hospital and was sent home.
Johnny Hartmann a 15 year old son of Mr and Mrs Emi Hartmann sustained serious mangling of his right hand while attempting to place a rock under a truck wheel on an incline. He received emergency care at a local hospital and was sent home.
The 4 H Club and IF A sale and show will be held at the Gillespie County Fair Grounds on February 18. A total of twenty seven calves and thirty lambs will be on exhibition with expected high quality and finish. H A Fitzhugh County Agent will place the animals and is noted as a competent judge. M F Pyka returns as sale organizer after two years. Prize winners are to be exhibited at the Southwest Texas event.
A Deputy Tax Collector will be at the Courthouse in Fredericksburg on Monday February 20 from 8 am to 5 pm to help eligible taxpayers prepare income tax returns. The service is free. Returns must be filed in the Collector’s office by March 15, 1939. mailing on March 15 does not meet the requirement.
President Roosevelt urged immediate House action to restore nearly 875 million to 725 million for the Works Progress Administration as millions face continued federal aid. He accused Senate and House opponents of stalling while democrats signaled delays lasting weeks.
The Fredericksburg co op U S Weather Bureau station is completed this week with instruments and shelters installed on West College Street. Alfred Neffendorf city water engineer oversees readings, ensuring reliable local and national weather information. The government supplied maximum and minimum thermometers will record daily high and low temperatures.
Fredericksburg hosts two Boy Scout Troops, No 1 under Lions Club and No 2 under the American Legion, planning services and a 29th anniversary gathering. Troop 1 meets at Gillespie County Agriculture Building, Troop 2 at the American Legion Hall in the Palace Theatre building. A board of review and court of honor will be held at the Agriculture Building with troop committeemen judging the youths' work.
The South Texas Fair Circuit held its annual convention in La Grange Texas to transact routine business and elect officers for the year. Nine fairs six shows a rodeo and two orchestras were represented with 64 delegates and visitors attending. Gillespie County reps were Max J. Bierschwabe and O H Burgdorf who was elected Secretary Treasurer. G B Robertson of Gonzales served as President and Dr H G Hertel of Giddings as Vice President. Fredericksburg dates were set for August 18 19 and 20 with next year’s convention planned for Gonzales.
The Fredericksburg National Bank will be closed Monday February 13 in observance of Lincoln's Birthday, which falls on a Sunday this year.
On February 15 the world famous Marquis appears at Fredericksburg High School Auditorium for a two hour magic show after a 7:30 PM concert by the Fredericksburg Concert Band. The event, titled Magic Day, draws students and locals with a display hailed as optical wonders by critics.
Willie Cornehl a ranchman of the Mecklenburg Community suffered a fractured bone and dislocated the elbow of his right arm Friday evening when the horse he was riding became frisky and threw him into a ditch and into rocks near his home. He was rushed to town in an ambulance and remained in hospital this week to recover from his accident.

He quotes that today’s magic is tomorrow’s science and notes how names like Kellar Herrmann Houdini and Thurston have faded from memory as he continues his survey of mystic thrills.
Hugo Weinheimer of Pedernales Electric Cooperative mails notices to bid on the largest U S rural electrification project. The 15 county Texas project spans 1811.5 miles across Gillespie Bell Burnet Blanco Comal Hays Llano Kendall Kerr Kimble Mason Menard McCulloch San Saba and Travis. It is divided into six sections with bids due February 20 for Section 1 covering Mason Llano McCulloch San Saba Menard and Kimble counties.
Applications for 1939 emergency crop and feed loans are being received at the Chamber of Commerce office from farmers with small cash needs who cannot obtain credit elsewhere. Loans cover immediate cash needs for 1939 crops or livestock feed, and exclude those who can borrow from other sources.
Four families or rather four groups are not what I said. Seventy 4-H club boys have enrolled for 1939 in the county. Thirty five will work on crop demonstrations planting corn grain sorghums and peanuts. The other thirty five will raise and show calves lambs hogs and poultry with state certified seed ordered for crops. Funds come from the Fredericksburg Chamber of Commerce and the county agent asks interested boys to notify him.
