Col Alfred Petsch urges renewed Hill Country charity work to aid the poor during winter. He praises local groups and Christmas lights funded by the Chamber of Commerce, noting prior skepticism overcome. He calls for active courthouse planning and strong civic duty statewide.
Citizens across Gillespie County call for a mass meeting at the courthouse on Tuesday December 14 at 7 30 p m to decide on building a new courthouse. Proponents say repairs are costly and temporary and Senate vaults and records are unsafe and should be preserved with a new facility. Continued on page 3 Col 5.
The local post office urges shoppers to mail gifts and letters early to avoid holiday delays. Mail volume doubles in the season, and parcels should be securely packed with strong paper and twine. To ensure delivery by Christmas, mail items at least one week to ten days before the holiday.
The Supreme Court of Texas on December 1 denied for want of jurisdiction an application for writ of error by Arnold Meyer and others. The decision of the Court of Civil Appeals affirmed the trial court ruling in condemnation proceedings for highway purposes along the Pedernales River. The Meyer case ends a batch of seventeen suits by Gillespie County to obtain land for Highway 81. the Emil Hohman appeal was dismissed earlier.
A plane en route Dallas to San Antonio crashed in heavy mist in Austin, killing Capt F. A. Avelino of the Mexican army in training at Kelly Field and two year old Leonard Albright, son of a UT professor. A second child was injured. the aircraft struck a neighbor’s house before entering the Albright home.
Santa Claus greeted by Fredericksburg volunteers as thousands of children and parents gathered despite bad weather. He toured Main Street in a fire department escort and delivered 2000 gifts at the Courthouse Pavilion before saluting local businesses and exiting at 6 pm.
Frederickshoro High School announces eighteen Hill Billie football lettermen under Coach Klaerner. Seven seniors complete their last FHS football year in 1937, with eleven players still eligible for future seasons. Senior captains include Chester Langerhans and Billie Hahn among others. Werner Land received a student manager’s letter.
San Antonio figures Judge Robert Lee Bobbitt and Judge W O Murray join Kendall county ranch host Judge Herman Usener for a deer and turkey hunt. Murray serves on the Court of Civil Appeals while Bobbitt has chaired the Highway Commission. Both men are longtime friends of Col Petsch, also present.

Texas Highway Commission outlined a 1933 39 federal aid highway program totaling 15 915 220 for new construction starting July 1. Federal funds would cover 7 957 610 with 905 miles of highway work including 640 miles paved. Projects include Kimble and Mason counties in the Hill Country with highway 27 resurfacing and highway 2 widening from Llano to Mason. The program depends on Congress and Roosevelt's requested road building holiday and what funds become available.
The December PTA meeting, presided by chair man Mrs W C White, drew strong attendance. Miss Julia Estill opened with prayer and Miss Father Mueller read the National President's message. Intermediate pupils staged a Christmas program with German gongs by the 6th grade and Evelyn Limmer at the piano. A Christmas reading featured Kermit Haag, Kermit Luckenbach, Annie Mae Mangsberger, Gertrude Grobe, Madeline Land and Arthur Petersen. The Grammar School Orchestra, under Miss Virginia Harrison, performed.
Funeral services were held in Mason for Delphine McWilliams 17 and Bryan Rolston 27 who died in a Saturday night auto crash 12 miles south of Brady on Highway 9. McWilliams daughter of Mr and Mrs Isaac McWilliams. interment Gooch Cemetery. Rolston rites were at his parents Long Mountain home. survivors include parents two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schmidt zinsky celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at the Rocky Hill Community home of their daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs Louis Stehling. The couple ages 78 and 70 were joined by family neighbors and friends for a noon feast and an afternoon of games and conversation.
Llano Texas December 4 Work will start Monday on the new Valley Spring school in Llano County funded by a 1500 dollar bond issue and WPA labor. Granite donated by C R Stolz will be used with material from the old building to create a modern structure valued at about 9000 dollars. Nothing ages one like laziness.
Gillespie County completed its first annual Red Cross Roll in years. The turnout was less than sponsors hoped but given twenty years without a local Red Cross organization the results are gratifying. The American National Red Cross is a permanent organization overseen by congressional act.
At the Tuesday December 7 meeting the local Red Cross Organization elected A. D. Stahl as president E. W White and Fred Mathisen as vice presidents Elsbeth Hanisch as treasurer The article invites donations from those not yet seen to the Chamber of Commerce.
Members of the Hilda Methodist Episcopal Church celebrated the church history dating to 1856 and its founding in Castell. A three day program led by Rev. H Steinmann recalled early German Methodist pioneers including Dr. William Nast and Rev. C A Grote. The piece notes post office history and Castell’s 1856 organization with Rev. John DeVilbiss as presiding elder.
