Penitentiary Sentences Drag on District Court Docket

The districts court week closed with two penitentiary terms for theft and burglary and two accomplice penalties for Dillard Hedge and Delba Lee Nivens. Other criminal matters included a pending murder case, dismissals for Meadows and Uhr, fines for theft, and civil actions on debt and auto accident damages. The City of Fredericksburg versus Gillespie County trespass suit proceeded to a jury with city attorney Agnes Sagebiel and county representation, trial continuing into the next session.

Heavy Rains Fail in Areas Of Gillespie County

Sections of Gillespie County saw heavy rains Sunday night into Monday raising the Pedernales River and local creeks. Heaviest falls near Morris Ranch with 5 inches. Fredericksburg and Doss reported multiple inches. No damages reported though terraces broke and some ranchers lost goats.

Two Named To Gillespie Red Cross Board

Harry Hart mann and Clarence Kiesling were named to fill vacancies on the Gillespie County Red Cross Chapter Board of Directors by Chapter Chairman Mrs Leola Mathisen. Frank Cheavens to Speak at Court House Event

Texas author and lecturer Frank Cheavens will address the public at the Court House on Wednesday evening September 6 at 8 pm under the PTA. Invited guests include women’s groups from the Hill Country, Kerrville, Harper, and St Mary’s Auxiliary. He serves as counselor for Austin public schools and writes for multiple magazines.

Old Teamsters Reunion Slated On Labor Day

The Gillespie County Old Teamsters Association plans its annual Labor Day reunion on Monday September 4 at Alfred Klaerner Park. Officers include Albert Kott president and John Stehling vice president with a 2 p.m. start and a 3 p.m. business meeting followed by a memorial for deceased members. A barbecue supper with free coffee and a free will offering to cover expenses is planned. Committee chairs Alfred Pfiester Alfred Klaerner and Alfred Petmecky lead arrangements for barbecue music and refreshments.

Dove Season Opens Here Next Friday

The first fall hunting season opens Friday September 1 in Gillespie and surrounding counties north zone. Prospects are average with recent heavy rains filling water holes. bag limit 10 per day and 10 in possession. Shotguns limited to 10 gauge and plugged to three shells. Rifles not allowed. Shooting hours are half an hour before sunrise to sunset.

Light Turnout in Gillespie County Run-Off Primary

Gillespie County voters cast only 157 votes in a light Democratic run-off, with counts showing John C. White leading J. E. McDonald in agriculture and Ben Ramsey defeating Pierce Brooks for Lieutenant Governor. Local totals show White 48 and McDonald 109 votes from Gillespie, while other races saw narrow margins and several candidates winning.

City County Case in Hands of Jury

The City-County case seeking title to a portion of Courthouse Square went to the jury at 2 30 p m. today. By 3 00 p m the jury had reached a decision. Mr and Mrs Gilbert Gellermann and children left for Niles California after visiting their parents. Mrs Gellermann is Eddie Hartmanns daughter and Gilbert works at a California steel mill.
