San Antonio Youth Dies Of Accidental Gun Shot Wound

Earl Wayne Fowler seven year old son of Mr and Mrs C A Fowler of San Antonio was accidentally shot and killed by his brother Charles Allan Fowler nine while on a squirrel hunt on the Gammenthaler ranch near Harper. The shot from a .22 rifle struck his chest. Justice of the Peace War Bruns ruled accidental death. Funeral services were held August 20 at Beckmann Funeral Home with burial in City Cemetery. Survivors include his parents his brother and grandparents.

Ten Precincts To Hold Run Off Primary Saturday

Gillespie County Democrats will hold run off voting Saturday August 26 in ten precincts Fredericksburg Doss Harper Stonewall Willow City Rocky Hill Pedernales to choose candidates for state offices. Eligible voters reside only in those precincts. Run off races include Lt Governor Ben Ramsey vs Pierce Brooks and Supreme Court Place No 1 Will Wilson vs Fagan Dickson Place 3 Meade F Griffin vs George W Harwood Criminal Appeals judge W A Morrison vs Bob Lattimore and Agriculture Commissioner J E McDonald vs John White.

Fredericksburg Standard Awarded West Texas Honor

Civil Case On Trial in 33rd District Court Fredericksburg

Jury trial underway in Fredericksburg with Judge Tom Ferguson presiding. The case Bobo versus Conley concerns a Pioneer Village cafe lease. Grand jury returned eight indictments and heard a case of felony theft. Four divorces granted this week, two dismissed, and four other civil suits disposed of.

Derby Winner Derby Winner at 62nd County Fair

Spectators packed the grandstand as Speedy won the featured mile and seventy derby closing a three day racing program. The Fair Association committee posed for a photo with the garland as trainer Jack Hughes owner E D Reed of Comfort and other officials were recognized.

Wounded Sgt J D Lang in Korean conflict reported

Sgt J D Lang 27 son of Mr and Mrs H A Lang was wounded in his right hand in Korea on July 15. He wrote from Japan that he may lose a thumb but hospital crowds slow care. He describes 36 days on the line and heavy losses. Lang served in World War III with the Coast Guard 1942 46 and re enlisted in 1948 for three years. His brothers Archie and H A Jr Lang also serve in the Army.

Gillespie County Sees Tax Rate Increase to 6 Cents

Gillespie County adopts a 6 cent increase in the tax rate this year raising the total levy to 74 795 16. The Jury fund and Courthouse Jail Bond funds gain 4 and 2 cents respectively while other funds stay at current rates. School taxes range from 25 cents in Pec an Creek to 1 40 dollars in Harper with many rural districts at 70 cents. Fredericksburg and Harper districts see notable rises in rate.

St Marys School Registration Underway With New Kindergarten

Registration at St Marys High School and Elementary begins now and runs until August 27 with classes starting September 5. A new Kindergarten under Mrs Hugo Klein will open, aiming to finalize numbers for early equipment. The football squad trains under Coach Anthony Knopp and the Pep Squad looks strong. The faculty includes Sister Fortunata, Sister Mary of Providence, Sister Clementia, Sister Carmel, and Mr Knopp, with minor changes in the elementary staff.

Traffic lights fail citywide after circuit damage

A short circuit damaged the traffic control box at the Fire Station causing lights to go out Tuesday. Utility manager Felix Wilke said repairs were underway Wednesday and new parts may be needed, leaving the system down for several days. Officials urged drivers and pedestrians to proceed with extreme caution.
