Construction Starts Monday on Llano Road Bridge

State Highway officials announce start of construction for a new reinforced concrete bridge over town creek on the Llano Highway with Collins Construction Company moving in this week. Traffic will be diverted at Austin Street and Travis Street to use the Adams Street bridge during the project. Seaboat work also begins on Highway 290 west of Liveoak Creek Bridge toward Harper to repair ice damage. Mayor Molberg reports curb to curb paving along state highways into Fredericksburg from Mason and Llano, with curb work near Austin Highway near completion. City Hall and Fire Station brick work to start in early September as crews pour forms, aided by city road and utilities workers after shifting crews to finish in one day.

Grand Jury Recall Marks Week in County Court

The 60th annual county fair notes a Monday morning grand jury recall as eight cases, three civil and five criminal, are disposed since last Wednesday. Civil actions Theodore Wahrmund versus Fredericksburg National Bank and Henry Borchers versus D L Deikman were withdrawn, settled and dismissed. Five criminal cases include Texas versus James V Greeson and John Tinney for liquor violations, both pled guilty with $100 fines and costs. Fritz burglary case dismissed. Carnes child desertion dismissed. Jay drunken driving dismissed. Petit jurors summoned for week three must report Tuesday at 9 a.m. to voir dire for Quality Building Material Co. v James Schmulen.

Registration Dates Set For Selective Service Early Fall

The 1948 selective service registration opens August 30 and runs through September 18 with 18 to 25 year olds registering at local boards. Four Gillespie County sites join Fredericksburg Harper Willow City and Stonewall to ease access. Veterans must bring service numbers and dates of entry and separation.

Demo Run-Off Election Set For Saturday

County polls will open 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. for the Democratic Run-Off Primary on Saturday August 28 announced by democratic chairman Tom Schmidt. Twenty three precincts vote including Cherry Mountain where the first July primary was postponed. Arthur Tatsch is named for the Cherry Mountain precinct.

Youth Loses Arm In Burnet Road Car Crash

Martin Hartmann seriously injured when his Nash and Arnold Gastinger's Model A Ford side swiped on Burnet road between 7 and 8 p m. Hartmann, 19, had his left arm amputated at the elbow and was taken to the hospital. Gastinger uninjured. Hartmann recovering as well as can be expected.

Wesley Grobe Home Destroyed By Flames Sunday

The partially completed home of Mr and Mrs Wesley Grobe on Mesquite Street in South Heights burned Sunday afternoon at 4 30 p m from an undetermined origin. The Grobes and their children had left earlier to visit in Crab apple. Firefighters saved portions of walls but the blaze had progressed too far. Loss unofficially 4000 with no insurance.

Red Cross Leads Aid Drive for Stricken Grobe Family

Gillespie County Red Cross via Alfred Neffendorf organizes a goodwill donation for the Wesley Grobe family after a Sunday afternoon fire destroyed their home and belongings. The chapter opened with a cash gift and invites further contributions, sent directly to the family at the Jim Ruff residence.

San Antonio youths busted for garage theft in Gillespie County

Four San Antonio youths ages 15 to 18 were arrested by Johnson City deputies after attempting to steal a plier at a filling station. They confessed to stealing tires and a tool box from Hein Motors in Fredericksburg. The suspects are Robert Buffington, Claude Edwards, William Klise, and Richard Klise. They are held in Gillespie County jail on theft charges as grand jurors were recalled for August 30.
