Forty Aspirants Report For Opening Grid Drills At FHS

Forty aspirants reported for the 1948 Hillbilly football opening drills under Coach Damron at FHS as the team prepares for a ten game schedule ending November 19. Morning and afternoon sessions aim to build fundamentals and starters with assist from Junior Coach Roy Langerhennig and assistant Earl W. Stombaugh.

Fredericksburg Citizens Saluted on KABC Friday

Prominent Fredericksburg residents are to be saluted on KABC during the Noonday Jamboree from the Gillespie County Fair Grandstand Friday August 20. The program runs 11 45 a m to 1 00 p m with a 15 minute warm up and 12 noon air time.

Grand Jury Finds No Bills As Court Term Opens Here

Judge Thomas Ferguson presides the fall District Court term opening here Monday. A grand jury impaneled for two days found no indictments and was dismissed Tuesday afternoon. A venire of 40 petit jurors was ordered for August 23. One criminal case Floyd McPeak was found guilty of auto theft and given a two year penitentiary sentence. Twelve civil suits and five divorces were heard, with most divorces dismissed and two granted. Custody and support orders were issued in one custody case.

Fredericksburg Fogged With DDT In Citywide Spraying

Fredericksburg residents woke Tuesday to dense air as DDT spraying covered all streets. The Martin Smith Co of San Antonio operated a Jeep mounted fogging unit. City funds and Gillespie County Precinct No 1 supported the campaign to curb disease bearing insects.

Rubin Nixon Receives County Conservation Plaque for 1948

Doss farmer Rubin Nixon was honored Wednesday night with a plaque as Gillespie County Soil Conservation District’s outstanding conservation farmer. The award, donated by Ft. Worth Lions Club, was presented at the Lions Club meeting in the Nimitz Hotel. Roy Gough spoke on soil conservation and water levels, with Dudley T. Mann introducing him. The Gillespie District board and state essay contest winners were also acknowledged.

Car Abandoned By Holdup Pair Recovered Near Here

A 1946 Chevrolet two door sedan stolen from San Antonio resident A. G. Wilson after knife threats was found on Tivydale road twenty miles south of Brady. Wilson, the robbery victim, reported being forced from his car near Mason after picks up two GI hitchhikers en route to San Antonio. He later claimed the vehicle and cash ($20 to $30) and flagged a bus to report the theft in Brady. Local officers were alerted.

KNAF Plans Three Day Gillespie County Fair Broadcasts

KNAF radio schedules three days of Gillespie County Fair coverage. Livestock judging Friday at 9 am, parade 10 to 10:30 am, then Goldthwaite vs Fredericksburg baseball at 2:30 pm. Saturday includes livestock judging 9 10 am remote exhibits 1 36 to 1 45 pm, two baseball games 2:30 pm Hondo vs Fredericksburg and 4:30 pm Stonewall vs Harper. Sunday features Frederickburg Centennial Band concert at 1:30 pm and a Sunday baseball game between A B Axel Co. and another team.

Local National Guard Unit In Summer Training

Fredericksburg unit of the National Guard Service Battery 155th Field Artillery Battalion leaves at 6 30 for a two week Texas National Guard summer camp at Camp Hood Texas. Kerrville unit joins and 8500 men from 200 Texas units attend the camp running through August 29 with tasks in communications ordnance artillery radio rifle and heavy weapons.

Gillespie County Fair Opens With Grand Parade

Gillespie County's 60th annual fair launches with a colorful parade on Fredericksburg Main Street at 10 a m. Friday. More than thirty units participate in the event, marking the official opening of the oldest county fair in the state.

Three day Gillespie County Fair to feature races exhibits and parades

A three day Gillespie County Fair program includes horse races four baseball games agricultural and ladies exhibits and commercial displays. Three radio shows broadcast from the grounds accompany a carnival and dance. The parade will be led by Alzafar Shrine units of San Antonio with 110 musicians and the Fredericksburg Centennial Band.

Westerfeldt named principal of Fredericksburg High School

W C Westerfeldt was named principal of Fredericksburg High School to succeed S E Reed at a board meeting on Tuesday night. The opening of the 1948 49 term was postponed to September 7 due to delays in completing new buildings on the campus, said Supt A K Krause.

First Gillespie County Fairs Recapped by Pioneers

Five early Gillespie County residents recount the first fairs held in Braeutigam s Garden near Fort Martin Scott and later exhibitions by the Farmer s Verein. They recall matched horse races on a straightaway track with two graded trails, jockeys Heimann and Kaerner among the riders, and a long-standing cross-creek course near the Braeutigam home.
