Near OK on Mokena pay hikes

The Mokena village board approved a salary and benefits package raising average pay about 5.6 percent for town employees. The plan, proposed by Village President Michael Everett, increases salaries above the prior proposal but below employees’ demands, with office staff receiving the largest jump to align with other departments. Final approval hinges on employee briefing and the 1983 84 budget adoption. The budget shows the village expecting 2 213 000 in revenues and 1 633 000 in expenses, dominated by general and sewer water funds.

Lawmakers toward tentative tax package amid hesitance

Springfield area legislators greeted a compromise tax plan with reluctance yet acceptance after a series of summit talks. Gov. James Thompson stated the package would raise enough revenue to avoid budget cuts in mental health, education, corrections and public aid, though it falls short of some funding requests. The plan, largely driven by House Republicans led by Lee Daniels, mixes temporary and permanent hikes with relief, hiking individual income tax from 2.5 to 3 percent retroactive to January 1, with the extra half percent set to expire June 30, 1984.
