The steel strike at Duquesne near Pittsburg failed to pull Carnegie plant workers from the mail today though a McKeesport march was planned. With only two men refusing to return to work the plant reopened and officials predict a resumed operation within a week.
Vice President Theodore Roosevelt arrived in Minneapolis at 8 30 am from Chicago to participate in the state fair opening. He spoke to thousands at Hamline grounds and urged balanced laws protecting workers while regulating powerful corporate interests. Roosevelt noted that national progress requires cooperation and lawful action by both individuals and the community.
Chicago work ingmen and musicians joined a massive Labor Day parade and picnics as business paused citywide. The crowd included 25 000 trades unionists, with speakers such as Senators Mason Cul tom Mayor Harrison and ex governor candidate Samuel Alschuler. Union labels adorned items and even horses were shod by union smiths. South Chicago steel workers not invited due to a strike order held a separate employer arranged picnic.
Labor day was observed with large parades in Milwaukee Columbus and St Louis. Milwaukee saw about 15000 workers in a monster parade ending at Schlitz park where local leaders spoke. In Columbus as many as 10000 marched and listened to speeches at Andrew's grave. President Cannon critiqued Andrew Carnegie and the steel trust. In St Louis two major parades drew thousands, with business nearly suspended and extensive family celebrations.

A morning blaze at the frame Hotel McKee in Pittsburgh’s east end caused one death, four serious injuries, and a wide escape. Harry McKee, 11, son of the proprietor, perished in a room above the kitchen. The injured include Delia Campbell, John M Gray, Harry Mardles, Harry Mc Cover, and Mary Wolesha. The fire followed a gasoline stove explosion tied to Miss Campbell attempting to light it. all expected to recover except Miss Campbell who faces likely death.
Finishing touches are put on the new St Catherine's academy on West DeWald street built by St Patrick's parish this year. The brick building behind St Patrick's church will house more girls from the parochial school and will be run by the Sisters of Providence, opening next Monday.
S. D. Hanna was struck by a bicyclist during a Sunday race at Swinney park. He suffered painful bruises and a head cut after a rider swerved to avoid another rider and collided with him while Harry Pickard paced the event.
Track-laying on the New Haven Butler railroad halted Saturday as rails reached a point fifty yards west of the wagon road leading to the bridge north of New Haven. Earlier in the week officials hoped to reach the bridge abutments by Saturday, but 300 to 400 feet of grading remained east of the wagon road. Gradual work was concentrated there and expected to finish within a day.
Hundreds of Fort Wayne residents visited New Haven on Sunday by buggies and wagons to inspect the new railroad and observe construction progress.
A Saturday morning blaze in Antwerp Ohio gutted the Shaffer saloon millinery store and adjacent restaurant. Damage nears $5,000 with about $2,000 insured. Night watchman spotted the fire. the Shaffer family was rescued from their upstairs residence by ladders as townspeople fought the flames.
Indianapolis dispatch reports Indiana braces for 1904 politics. Republicans elect James Goodrich as state chairman after ousting Charles Hernly over a New York interview. Senator Fairbanks widens influence, appointing Albert Wishard to Washington post. Governors and party leaders face reshuffles as Durbin, Beveridge, and Morss considerations stir the state.
Rev. A. E. Lafontaine, recently named Fort Wayne diocesan school examiner by Bishop Alerding, sails east to study methods for a superior system. A linguist fluent in German, French, Italian, and studying Polish, he is the first appointed examiner, replacing prior board-led supervision of schools.
St. Mary's and St. Peter's German Catholic parochial schools opened for the fall term with greatly increased attendance over last year. At St. Mary's church temporary quarters have been fitted for the boys until the new school is completed and the roof on the building was being put on today. occupancy is expected December 1.
Mr and Mrs C A Lanier of Statesboro Ga welcome a baby boy. Mrs Lanier is formerly Miss Luella Boles and is remembered in local circles for her earlier name and ties to the community.

Louis Benica of Fort Wayne, a Wabash baggage man, wed a Defiance Ohio woman after Indiana law blocked a Loganport license. They traveled to Defiance to obtain permission and were married there yesterday. The couple, both well regarded, expect congratulations from friends.
A horse owned by the Haffner bakery bolted this morning after a passing train frightened it. The animal ran south on Broadway, then west on Michigan avenue before being halted. The rig sustained minor damage and the incident caused brief excitement along Broadway.
Louis A. Parrot a traction company conductor suffered a hand injury yesterday on a Malin street car. While reaching for a dropped pencil the point pierced his palm and caused an accident during a trip sheet entry.
