The advance guard of the Italian occupation landed at Tobruk on the northeastern coast of Tripoli. The main expedition remains at sea as thousands of troops sail from Italy. Turkish cabinet considers closing Italian interests and seizing Italian vessels. Reports from Rome and Malta confirm initial landings and large troop movements toward Tripoli.
Rome reports a major portion of the Italian expedition is en route to Tripoli. A large contingent sailed from Naples last night, Taranto transports departed at sunrise, and more troops leave Agosta tonight. The three groups will unite east of Malta.
The landing of a full army corps at Tripoli is viewed as one of the war's most challenging operations though enemy attack is not feared. Precautions for troop safety are extensive as the battleship convoy covers a moving zone one mile by five miles with transports operating within it.
Arthur Smith, Fort Wayne aviator, piloted his Curtisa type biplane the Honey Bug with cat mascot Punk from Fort Wayne to New Haven. He landed safely after circling the town and later completed a return flight to Fort Wayne despite a connecting-rod failure midair.
New York Oct 10 Cornelius N Bliss former secretary of the interior and longtime Republican leader died here last night. Bliss served as treasurer of the Republican National Committee from 1892 to 1908 and helped direct several presidential campaigns. Born Jan 20 1833 in Fall River Massachusetts he built a prominent business career in New York and Boston. He married Elizabeth Plumer in 1839 and was active in clubs and the New England Society. Pauline Herring has gone to Wabash for a few days visit.
A blood stained Auburn car crashed into a West Superior street telephone pole near Webster after a high speed drive from Lakeside. The vehicle, stolen from Dr. L. L. Gardner, shows a mutilated windshield and clues like bloodied gloves and handkerchiefs. Police pursue identities of two youths who fled the scene. Damage valued at about $300.
The national waterways commission will travel from Toledo on November 1 to inspect a proposed barge canal from Lake Erie to Lake Michigan via the Maumee River and Fort Wayne. The delegation, led by Senator Burton, will reach Defiance and Fort Wayne for hearings and hopes to accommodate local lodging and travel needs.
President Taft spent the night in Seattle and planned two speeches, a naval yard visit, and a steamer ride to Tacoma. He breakfasted with Congressman Humphrey, christened Charles Taft Snowden, and spoke to a large open air crowd before dining with former interior secretary Ballinger and departing by steamer to Puget Sound Navy Yard.
Logansport Indiana October 10 Robert Planck four year old son of John Planck of Walton ten miles south of Logansport poured gasoline into a pumpkin head when he found no candle. He lit a match and flames shot through the pumpkin’s features setting his night dress ablaze. He was badly burned but the flames soon burned out.
Daisy B. Adams files in superior court alleging her traveling salesman husband spent earnings on drink and leisure while she performed as violinist and cornetist. She says he avoided hearings, failed to help with business, and kept his lock on shared auto. She seeks restoration of maiden name, $1000 alimony, and restraining order to protect assets.
In Allen county the Farmers Mutual Fire Association closes a successful year with over seven million dollars in insurance in force and total receipts. The annual meeting saw President George Vo Kell and officers present a year’s summary listing policy growth and losses by cause.
Chicago October 10 State Senator Frank A Landee testified before the Lorimer investigation committee declaring that the late Charles A Luke offered to sell ten votes for a U S senator at the 1909 Illinois legislature session Landee noted Luke was drinking and thus his offer was not taken seriously Eight witnesses were scheduled the first session of the reopened inquiry with rules of evidence discarded to admit any testimony bearing on the case
Denver reports a massive flood across southwestern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico with hundreds of miles of railroad out of service and telegraph and telephone crippled. Deaths confirmed include a drowned teacher and a seven person Mexican family, and an agency building cost 200000 was destroyed. Property losses reach about 5 million dollars as railroad service awaits up to sixty days to resume.
A Missouri jury ruled that a doctor who is also a preacher cannot charge for preaching a funeral he attended. Dr M Shoush attended Mrs Susan Vara during illness, preached the funeral, and billed ten dollars for preaching. Administrator A S Paulis objected and the probate judge had the jury decide, deducting the ten dollars from the bill.
