Special to The Sentinel Huntington Indiana May 17 jurors return a four hour verdict finding Kahlenbeck guilty of murder as charged and sentence him to life imprisonment. Prosecutors showed Lorenzo, a Russian Jew peddler, was killed on February 10 for robbery. The term also recalls former murder cases Pfeifer and Mrs Epps from 1888.
Bourrron Indiana May 19 Capt Peter Studebaker of this city died last night at his daughter’s residence in Farm land after a brief illness caused by erysipelas from a war wound. He was a longtime Binghamton resident, vice president of the Exchange bank, a lifelong Democrat, and uncle of Hon Hugh Dougherty. His death met universal mourning.
Mronmtean Orry Indiana May 19 Coy and Bernhammer Indianapolis tally sheet forgers arrived here safely. They were examined by Tom McMahon captain of the night guard and then sent to the wash house with Guard Smith. Coy received a new outfit while Bernhammer kept his old suit but had beard and hair removed under protest. They dined on beef steak and potatoes as Coy spoke of their trip and expectations. Coy sentenced a year and a half. Bernhammer one year. both sentenced February 3.

Sam Hunt named chairman and W B Dobson secretary as Democrats nominate slate by acclamation including Boston Young for secretary of state Lyman Critchfield for supreme court James Emmett for board of public works The platform pledges support for Cleveland administration Mills tariff land held for settlers pensions and tax cuts with anti monopoly stance while denouncing Republican appropriations and praising labor protection Balloting for delegates-at-large proceeds. New York Republicans elects state exec head and Missouri Republicans nominate Elbert Kimball for governor by acclamation.
A enthusiastic meeting of city ladies organized a mothers auxiliary at the new Y M C A. Officers named include Mrs John W Hayden president Mrs L D Keil vice president Mrs R M Hays secretary and Mrs E H McDonald treasurer. They plan a 1000 Mothers Fund with district canvassing to raise the money.
The Michigan Supreme Court unanimously voids the local option law, ruling it unconstitutional under Article 14, section 20, as it violates the single object rule. The act titled to regulate manufacture and sale of liquors does not reflect the law’s true scope.
The Kendallville Standard relays Rev. Father Duehmig of Avilla faced with a hungry infant on a train. To dodge curiosity he entrusted the child to a kindly passenger, fled to the smoking car, and reached Fort Wayne relieved by willing hands. Will he try again asks the piece.

Curiosity over Indiana delegates at the Methodist Episcopal general conference is answered with a tally. Eleven voted in favor of admitting women as delegates while nine voted against. Voting factions included ministers and laymen from Indiana conferences along with representatives from Northwest and Southeast Indiana. The vote concerned eligibility under the church constitution and law.
Ricamont May 19 report details that late Wayne county Auditor Braffett received 34000 dollars from the county about ten thousand more than his predecessor. Accusations of extortion and fraud led the board to seek a judicial probe, with Judge Comstock and Hon. L D Stubbs set to present findings to the grand jury. The three board members are Abram Gaar John Bowman and Mark Manudlin, blamed for carelessness rather than direct fraud.

New London resident Samuel J. Tilden of Columbia county has been offered the post of superintendent of the railway mail service in Washington, vacant by Thomas E Nash resignation. He will likely accept. Mr Tilden is a nephew of the late Governor Tilden.
In Psrenspune and Petersnva Virginia on May 18 the Republican state convention split in the Seventh district reporting two committees. Ex Congressmen John D Wise urged a national appeal to Chicago while about fifty followed him out. The Anti Mahone meeting adjourned into the early morning after electing leaders, naming delegates at large to Chicago and adopting a Blaine cheering platform. Senator D F Houston of Roanoke elected chair of the section.
Last week thieves entered Byron Thompson's stable on South Broadway and stole a sample case with fourteen cigar boxes partly filled with cigars and another case of rice. Officers Schrader and Stahlhut seized three tramps in the act of trading cigars for liquor at J. M. Reithmiller's grocery on Taylor street. The stolen goods were recovered and returned to Thompson. The trio Murray, Keale, and Smith were bound over to trial in $300 each after a thin tale from the suspects that a stranger pressed the items on them.
Logansport May 19. Donnie Needom and John McCracken of Peru were to fight for a finishes yesterday but sheriff Stanley and his posse halted the bout as it was about to begin. The ring stood on the Wabash bank five miles east of Logansport. About seventy five sports and newspapers men witnessed. Stakes were 200 dollars with the winner to take the gate receipts. The principals seconds and the referee were arrested under $200 bond for riot.

Monaco May 19 The national Republican convention in June 19 will be held in a near completion auditorium. The roof and flooring are finished, large galleries are set, and smaller galleries are under work. Completion is targeted in about four weeks with time to finish seating and decorating.

Renowned playwright Fred Marsden was found dead in his West 126th Street room this morning, having died by his own hand last night by opening a gas outlet and closing the window. His annual income from plays was reported as $10,000.

Indianapolis city council members debated a telegram misread by Alderman Smith. The note from an electric light company urged contracting and hinted at funding a junket to view competing systems. Smith contends the phrase sugar if necessary referred to covering council expenses, not improper influence.
Mrs Emma Harris of Montrenize Indiana returns with her five year old daughter from Fort Wayne. Her husband Edgar B Harris reportedly took out a license to marry Cora McIntosh of Fort Wayne and left with her for Chicago. Harris, an insurance agent, sent a letter from Chicago asking no trouble. The wife vows to have him arrested.
The state society of homeopathists closed its Indianapolis meeting Thursday by electing officers: President G. W. Bowen of Fort Wayne. First Vice President J. T. Boyd Indianapolis. Second Vice President E. P. Jones Marion. Secretary E. B. Grosvenor Richmond. Treasurer J. S. Martin Marion.
May 16 in Warsaw special report: Elias Surkett a well known Koscinsko county resident died when driving a young colt in a one horse wagon the animal bolted he was thrown from the wagon and sustained a fatal neck fracture He lived about a mile and a half west of Palestine and was uncle to Dr. O W Burkett of this city.
Jos R Anderson, nominated for governor by the Prohibitionists on Wednesday, died suddenly at his home yesterday morning in Quarrancona Tennessee.

Judges Lowry Morris handled the case where Thomas Trittipo deeded most property to his wife leaving heirs of his first marriage with little. In Portland on May 19 a contract for the Seattle Snake Shore and Eastern railway main lines, a 225 mile link between Seattle and Spokane Falls, was let for 5 million dollars. In Omana Nebraska last night a Pinkerton man hired by Burlington, while heading from depot to post office, was assaulted by Brotherhood engineers. He fired, killing Pete Rogers, then shot another man through the leg named Bits and wounded Kane. He fled toward the river and escaped.
The trial of Mrs. Edward Brash to recover 10000 from the Pennsylvania Railroad for her husband’s death, a switchman at the Pittsburg and Fort Wayne yard, ended in Columbia City Thursday with a verdict of 8000 for Mrs Brash. Judge Brackenridge moved for a new trial. Judge Ninde appeared for Mrs Brush.

Counsars Ohio May 18 The supreme court heard a motion to file a petition in error in Allen O Myers contempt case. Myers, sentenced to three months in county jail, awaits a decision expected Tuesday.
