James town tercentennial opening marks grand Atlantic display
Norfolk April 26 The James town tercentennial exposition opened with President Roosevelt aboard the Mayflower reviewing warships and addressing a vast crowd. A ceremonial gold button signaled the opening as 300 guns saluted, with a national anthem, speeches by Harry St George Tucker and Roosevelt, and a grand military review led by Major General Fred D Grant. The event, hampered by weather and unfinished buildings, aims to showcase Virginia’s historic sesquicentennial celebration through November 30.
