A premium race for a tube roller will flow along the St. Joe river next Monday after noon. The Sentinel lists fifteen entries already entered for the event.
A large Fort Wayne Merchants Manufacturers and Real Estate Exchange gathering, chaired by John Hough, discussed Wabash tariff updates expected August first, water works plans with engineer Chas Birkner, and home industry patronage. Mayor Zollinger urged revenue ideas for city bonds, and a new manufactory interest prompted telegraphic invitations. A 20 percent stock assessment was approved.
The new fair grounds and race track opened on Monday with clear skies and cool pleasant weather. About 2,000 attended as elegantly dressed spectators lined the grounds. Key races offered purses of 200 dollars each with Lucy winning the mile heats, and Dick Lewis taking the running race after withdrawals. A mishap occurred when Red Bird veered off, but both horse and rider escaped injury.
Charles A. Baker was arrested on an affidavit by Wm. Reed, a railroad conductor, charging assault with intent to murder after a midnight shooting at the Washington and Barr streets corner last Friday. The ball passed through Reed’s left hand. Baker posted $2,000 bonds and is due for examination Thursday at 10. S. M. Hench and W.G. Colerick appeared for the state and defense.

The note also lists Indiana patent grants for cotton presses and grain elevating cups issued in early July 1874 to John Gramelspacher of Jasper and A H Wardyke with G W Norman of Richmond.
A Swedish machinist named Fotin Nelson, found ill near the canal and died in Fort Wayne area, leaves questions about a thousand dollars. Sheriff Hance investigates letters from Elkhart and reports Nelson may have sent funds to Chicago. Suspicion of foul play fades as bank deposits are explored. An unnamed lawyer is said to pursue Nelson’s widow’s claim, while locals doubt a marriage ever occurred.
A Berlin dispatch outlines the proposed international convention on laws of war, detailing occupation authority, treatment of prisoners and noncombatants, allowed methods of warfare, and rules on sieges and bombardment. July twenty seventh reports from Pittsburg recount a catastrophic flood caused by a water spout, damaging Butcher's Run Valley and the north bank of the Allegheny River. Homes were torn apart, several deaths confirmed, and bodies recovered as National Guard detail, while churches suffered lightning strikes and residents view the wreckage.

It claims broad health benefits from dyspepsia to nervous ailments and general debility, contrasting it with mere temporary relief. It also mentions a San Francisco sea captain harshly criticized for trading a ship's Bible for tobacco.
New York dispatch reports no definite facts by morning on the Beecher scandal. Moulton and Tilton reportedly conferred, Moulton advised by Gen. Butler, and he may refuse to testify until compelled. Tilton suggests only evidence supporting Beecher’s innocence will be pursued by the commission.
Report suggests the committee will acquit the accused, with regret that further witnesses cannot be compelled. They reportedly decide not to call Mr Beecher until Tilton's statements gain more corroboration than his affidavit.
