In dense fog off Shelter Cove the steamers Columbia and San Pedro collided, the crash leaving more than thirty dead. The Columbia sank with loss amid the chaos, while the San Pedro suffered serious damage.
A fog bound collision between the steamer Columbia and the San Pedro near Shelter Cove results in about 100 deaths with most passengers and crew drowned. A few survivors reach Roanoke, which carries the dead to the morgue. the disaster occurred midnight after both ships failed to avoid the hull breach.
A Pere Marquette train carrying hundreds of Lonis shopmen and families crashes, causing numerous deaths and injuries. Rescue teams battle wreckage as authorities investigate the fatal collision and determine the cause.
Ionia Michigan reports thirty three dead and many injured after a Pere Marquette rail excursion collided with a freight train at Salem. The annual shop men outing to Detroit was en route when the crash occurred. three more fatalities followed as hospitals report critical conditions.
At Washburn crossing near Salem Michigan a Pere Marquette excursion train carrying nearly a thousand workers and families collided with a local freight train. Twenty nine bodies were recovered and one hundred injured, many fatally, with the crash telescoping the first three coaches and setting the smoking car ablaze.
The passenger steamer Columbia collided with the steam schooner San Pedro off the Mendocino coast. One hundred passengers died on Saturday night. The Columbia sank and rests submerged in Shelter Cove. Captain Doran, master of the Columbia, perished.
In Indianapolis the unveiling of a monument to Oliver P Morton, Indiana’s war governor, drew about 3000 Civil War veterans and Indiana National Guard. Notables included Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks and G A R leader General R B Brown. The monument at the east entrance of the state house cost 10000 dollars. Morton’s grandson Oliver Perry Morton of Hartford Conn performed the unveiling. Governor Hanly delivered the principal address.
In San Francisco on July 23 the Industrial Peace Conference planned its first session. It sent a letter asking Patrick Calhoun, president of United Railways, to withdraw his delegates, fearing disruption from those accused in court. Calhoun rejected the demand as cowardly and political.
St Petersburg July 23 new military district court regulations pushed to speed indictments and executions within seventy two hours. Drastically broader reach than drumhead courts, with multiple executions reported in Kiev Moscow Riga and Yekaterinoslav. A dozen cases include sapper and peasant defendants with death sentences and a 12 year old girl exile sentence.
Totally blind Robert H. Jones and his 14-year-old son Walter used a small yacht cannon to scare off five burglars attempting to enter their Thousand Islands Park home in New York on a July dawn. The pair discovered the intruders and warned the boy to fetch the toy weapon as protection.
In Karlsruhe on July 23 crowds flocked to purchase pamphlets detailing the Karl Hall verdict sentencing Hall to death. Rioting subsided after police cleared court area. the Molitor family fled to Baden Baden with police escort. An appeal to the supreme court is planned in a few days.
New York dispatch reports Esther Norling a likely victim of a shooting by her former employer Charles Warner as she entered an uptown haberdashery on West Forty second street where she worked as a bookkeeper. Warner allegedly shot at manager A R Spicer during his escape before fleeing to A G Spalding sports goods.
George T. Bennett of Bennett Electrical was shot and killed on a porch in Los Angeles. Estelle Cornell, a woman who had lived with him for years, is the alleged killer. The motive given centers on suspected infidelity and a fear of desertion, with the crime occurring at Miss Marguerite Bennett’s residence.
Chicago report ties the murder of Armenian trader Hovhans Tarshanjian to a rejected demand for a large revolutionary fund. Armenians say the motive was his refusal to fund rebels, not involvement in the Kasper murder. The article notes prior threats to four New York merchants and mentions Bedros Hampartzoonian, linked as alleged killer with address listed in Archer Avenue.

In Hopkinsville 75 to 100 armed assailants surrounded Stephen P. Mosely’s residence near Roaring Springs and fired about a hundred shots injuring Mosely in the face and hand while a wounded wire fragment struck Mrs Mosely. Three children narrowly escaped as the mob warned him to stop talking. The motive linked to anti association activity is suspected.
The Sentinel publishes the inaugural subscriber list for the new Fort Wayne hotel company. BE. C. Rurode signs, with West Berry and Harrison streets chosen as the site. Public funding shows strong local faith as bonds of 200000 are planned, with total project cost near 400000 and long lease offers emerging.
In Knoxville on July 22 Frank Wolliver, 19, was killed while demanding 25 cents owed by Mrs. Jenks. Amos Oglesby struck him with a stone and fired a shot that pierced his heart. Oglesby was arrested nearby by Chief Chandler.
