Reports from Madison to St Louis detail levee breaks near Mitchel and Alton Missouri causing rapid flooding. Vast bottomlands from Cairo to Kansas City submerged with crops ruined. Families flee to bluffs as livestock drowned and rail lines disrupted. Damage tallies rise with weeks of high water and ongoing breaches along the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.
Three men were killed and one fatally wounded after a boundary dispute over a fence in Collinsville Alabama. Participants AB Hall and son and Bob and John Mullens owned adjoining property. Hall killed Bob Mullens and fatally wounded John Mullens, who then killed Hall before Hall’s father was shot. All involved are described as wealthy and prominent.
The Waitara and Hurunui, ships of New Zealand Shipping Co., collided off Portland on Friday night. Waitara sank in two minutes with twenty five drownings. Hurunui rescued sixteen, including a saloon passenger saved by a life belt. Second class and steerage lost. captain of Waitara saved onto Hurunui. Both ships iron, 833 tons Waitara, built 1863.
The body of Charles T. Goodwin, cashier at the Lake Share freight house, was found in the lake near the breakwater. No letter explains the motive for death by his own hand. On the steamer Thomas Sherlock at Carro Isle two deck hands George Dudley and Thomas Jones quarreled over a cotton hook. Jones was probably fatally cut by Dudley who then jumped overboard and is believed to have drowned. The injured man died at the hospital and the assailant’s body was found in the river.
Police have arrested Bill Davis aged fifty and his wife aged seventeen over a string of burglaries and other serious crimes terrifying the area. Investigators say they acted in unison and led astray many young girls. The Bristol post office robbery is traced to them. The case is described as unusual and sensational.
The regular summer shutdown of Flint glass factories begins Saturday June 30, suspending operations for two months. One thousand five hundred workers will be idle as nineteen plants halt production, while President Clime reports improving trade activity in recent weeks.

The American rifle team arrived at noon and stays with the Midland rifle club until Tuesday.

BareBoo Wisconsin June 29 A freight train on the Northwestern road drawn by two engines crossed an iron bridge near Norwalk yesterday. The structure gave way, letting down both engines with three cars on them. Albert Gelthing the fireman of the first engine was scalded to death and W A Halenbeck was slightly scalded. The engineer and fireman of the second engine escaped by leaping into the water. The bridge, strong but undermined by late flood. Catholic Convention in Brooklyn. BROOKLYN June 28 The young men’s Catholic society from all quarters gathered in Brooklyn Tuesday evening escorted to the Mansion house by committees. They attended mass Bishop Lough officiating and afterwards proceeded to Haverly’s Theatre for the convention. Large attendance from Fort Wayne Chicago Albany Providence and others. In the absence of the president Bishop Keene Rev J H Mitchell presided. Two New Cable Lines New York June 2 Alderman Hadhey of London completed arrangements for a new cable line and company to be American British and Continental with capital 1 500 000. Two cables proposed landing at Belle Isle 300 miles north of Hart’s Continent N F and from Penzance to Sable Island 200 miles southeast of Halifax. Laying to begin September. St Louis June 29 Lane Brittan arrested for murder in Newton county. Brittan shot A N Christis and G G Davis in Granby and Nessha districts, then fled toward Indian Territory amid a pursuit.
