Adam Forepaugh senior, veteran showman, died of pneumonia with grip at his Philadelphia residence. He was sixty eight, leaving a widow and one son Adam Forepaugh Jr. In Crivaco Albert Paul Smith, Chicago Clearing House manager, died on a Coltags Grove avenue car. John Vanderbilt, a cousin of Commodore Vanderbilt, died in Denmark New Jersey at eighty three.
The President sent to the Senate nominations including Samuel Bailey Jr of Ohio as assistant treasurer at Cincinnati John E Haggert of North Dakota as U S marshal for North Dakota Elijah Coleman of Wisconsin as U S attorney for eastern Wisconsin Benjamin F Fowler of Wyoming as U S attorney for Wyoming Augustine Huard of Massachusetts as minister resident and consul general to Korea Louis Gotschalk of California as consul general at Stuttgart John Winger of Illinois as U S consul at Mannheim Richard Guenther of Wisconsin as consul general at Mexico City Thomas McDermott of Massachusetts as U S consul at St Thomas George W Pepper of Ohio as U S consul at Milan and naval officers Colger to head ordnance and several lieutenants. The House subcommittee began drafting a World’s Fair bill, clipping and pasting parts of New York and Chicago bills.
Prominent criminal attorney John McSweeney of Woosihn Ohio died at his home around 11 last night from acute pneumonia. Born near Rochester New York about sixty five years ago his career spanned Stark and Wayne counties. He studied at Western Reserve College and practiced with John Tarvis in Cincinnati before moving to the area in 1845. He was six feet tall with a magnetic voice and defended difficult cases. He was wealthy yet modest and survived by two daughters and a son, the latter a former Wayne County prosecuting attorney. He supported prosecutions in the Huligan murder and Star Route cases but never sought office. His wife died about four years ago.
London reports the Loch Moidrat sketched ashore at Callantsea Holland after leaving Pisa bound for Hamburg. Thirty crew members were washed overboard and perished. The Janet Cowan, returning to Plymouth in distress off the Isle of Wight, lost five crew and many sails but the remaining crew guided the ship to safety.
Engineer John French and Fireman John Richmond roasted to death when a freight train jumped the track in a blinding storm at Berthoud. A telegraph lineman is injured but recovering, conductor crawled to telegraph station through the drift, and trains remain delayed as sand piles across the rails.

In LaParerre Indiana on January 23 Judge Langdon admitted Elma Whitehead to bail under a Pettit murder indictment. Bail set at 10000 dollars was posted and she was released. Pettit remains imprisoned.
In Boston area, a post office was robbed when thieves pounded the safe with a sledge hammer. They stole about 900 in stamps 400 in cash and jewelry. registered bags cut open and packages looted. Guards restrained. one clerk freed himself and reported the incident after the robbers left.
Johann Most, the anarchist agitator, was arrested and sentenced to a year in the New York penitentiary after the Supreme Court affirmed the lower court. A large crowd gathered at the M. E. Church for memorial services in Lonor.

A Monon route express train eleven miles north of Indianapolis derailed and burned early today. Four passengers were killed and several others injured. They bound and robbed three men wounding one with a sword and escaped with twenty three head of horses. Another group killed animals and drove twenty horses and nineteen mules along the border. They tried to rob a store but fled after forcing a man named Santillana to strip. Captain Brooks of the rangers pursues them.
Victor Farrar of the Mail sued editor Kribbs of the Empire for libel claiming traitorous conduct. The case was dismissed as the complainant could not prove authorship. Several Empire emblems and evidence were examined but failed to establish proof.
Mrs Emma Toomey of Dunfee a deaf mute woman was struck and killed by a Nickel Plate engine near Dunfee ten miles west of the city as she walked along the tracks. The engineers warned her but she did not hear due to deafness and death was instantaneous. Relatives in this city mourn her loss.
