Walker Blaine eldest son of Hon. James G. Blaine secretary of state died at the Seward mansion in Washington at 8 20 last evening of acute pneumonia following an attack of love. Funeral plans set for Saturday from the Church of the Covenant with interment at Oak Hill cemetery. The funeral in Washington drew President Harrison and many officials.
A 16 year old daughter of a once wealthy Texan, now ruined by gambling, seeks the stage after a roving opera company collapses in Aurora. Sheltered by Indianapolis Home for Friendless Women, she communicates with a gravely distressed mother who arrives, berates, and assaults her before leaving for Chicago. The girl remains in shelter.
Cincinnati January 18 a vestibuled train from Chicago on the Cincinnati Hamilton and Dayton railroad struck the Glendale accommodation at College Hill junction ten last night. The crash left five dead and many injured as the locomotive of the Chicago train tore into the rear of the Glendale cars. Firemen extinguished the blaze and victims were taken to the hospital. Listed dead include John Wilson Charlies Keller F W Witherbee James Staley and others. Injured include engineers Coakley and Barker.
North Dakota lawmakers were called to the capital before sunrise as the house convened on Saturday. Absentees were summoned by the sergeant-at-arms while lawyers and farmers debated the revenue bill and licensing lawyers. The minority report was rejected and the license bill was recommended to pass.
A band of 800 Indians on St. Peter's reserve near Winnipeg is severely struck by the grippe with 75 percent down. Lacking medical care, many develop lung diseases and face high mortality. Officials are urged to send physicians to halt the outbreak among the unfamiliar epidemic.
In Washington on Capitol Hill at Metropolitan Presbyterian church Rev Dr Chester announced Samuel J Randall and Mrs Randall were admitted as members. Randall was baptized at home while Mrs Randall joined by letter. Reports on Randall’s health have improved and he hopes to sit in the house before the session ends. He remains an attentive reader of newspapers and well posted on congressional business.
Information from Flat Head Lake reports five Indians drowned on Sunday afternoon when a crossing on thin ice gave way. A party of thirteen attempted to cross Wild Horse Island to shave miles off travel. one rider crossed safely, but five others rode together and fell through with their ponies.
It was learned yesterday that six leading Cleveland breweries were purchased by an English syndicate for 975000 dollars. The acquired firms were Stoppel, Muth, Schneider, the Cleveland Brewing Company, Oppman and Baebr. Four remaining breweries seek 4200000 dollars, with likely sales next week, except Leisses and Schlatters.

He notes temperance advocates foresee a major struggle as communities react and law enforcement is intensified.
Ike Weir publishes a statement claiming he was honestly defeated by Billy Murphy. Murphy cancels road exhibitions after Australian fans denounce the result, offers a $500 forfeit to fight Weir again for $2,000, challenging any man at 122 pounds to beat him. Weir, penniless, seeks funds for home. Jack Dempsey, recovering from influenza, awaits a postponed match with Australian McCarthy due to rain, amid rumors he is dying.
In Washington on January 16, Mrs Morton, wife of the Vice President, refutes sensational reports of $1,000 gowns. Friends say she has spent at most $300 per costume and owns only three or four new dresses for the winter, showing little interest in fashion.
Ottawa reports indicate the queen's speech to be delivered will note strong representations to the imperial government on Behring Sea issues. In Morrellville near Johnston Pa on January 17 a west bound express struck a side track group, killing Edward Gallagher aged seventeen Michael Gallagher aged fifteen and Mia Kate Stidhouse. Mrs Stidhouse drove them to Morrellville before accompanying them to the funeral set for tomorrow. The city has seen many flood related deaths as pedestrians traverse rail lines due to missing bridges and routes.
In Ssepsrville near Camden Lucy Stoop, 22, attacked Mrs. Thomas Askins with a table knife over alleged slander. Askins likely to die. In Terre Haute John Y. Miller deputy marshal of Clay City was shot and killed by Granville Cooprider after a threat. Cooprider fled on a horse but was later captured. Miller had accused Coop rider of improper relations with his wife.
Contmbes Ohio Jan 17 Senator Ashburne of Clermont county died this morning. His death leaves the legislature with three Democratic members dead in a week and Senator Powell ill. The senate is tied, preventing partisan legislation.
In Washington on January 21 Senator Morrill remains at home with influenza while Senator Sherman plans to return to the capitol soon. Senator Edmunds also suffers a mild attack. In Kansas the Topotlcampo colonization scheme reports fraud with starving colonists and multiple Kansas settlers enticed by O B Hoffman to relocate months ago.
Funeral services for the late Dr J B Gregg were held at 10:30 this morning at the First Presbyterian church with Rev D W Moffatt delivering a tribute and a Masonic rite. The cortege included Anthony Wayne post and Fort Wayne commandery members. pallbearers included Capt F F Boltz Col C B Oakley and others. Interment was at Lindenwood. The Fort Wayne College of Medicine faculty issued resolutions of respect praising Dr Gregg emeritus professor of surgery and expressing sympathy to his family, with adjournment of the college to attend the funeral.
W T Abbott and partners file a petition with the county commissioners seeking a right of way for a new street railway to be built and operated by a stock company. The proposed line would run from Raymond and Gertrude in Abbott's addition west to Home then south to Pontiac and west to Wayne Trace then to Walton avenue near the New Lavigne gravel road in Adams Township outside the city. The plan promises to create a sanitarium if constructed.
Miss Clara Douglass Bond wed Tom M. Pierce of Grand Rapids at the Episcopal church last Wednesday in a white satin gown. Rev A W Seabrease officiated with Charles Bond giving the bride away amid guests from this city and Grand Rapids. The couple, after a reception at Oak Hall, left on a midnight train for Cincinnati and travel to their future Grand Rapids home, with guests arriving in Hughart’s private car.
Governor Hovey pardons 24 year old Benjamin J. Bosse, jailed for 21 years for manslaughter in 1884 in Lagrange county circuit court. Bosse, who was 16 at sentencing, has served eight years with good behavior and was released on New Year’s Eve after a lengthy pardon process led by the judge, prosecutor, and prominent locals.
A year ago January opened clear and warm with little winter. Cloudy days followed, then warmth and cool spells. Rain on January 9 gave way to snow by morning, followed by changing conditions. The month saw several snow storms including on the 20th 27th 28th 30th and 31st with continued variability.
In a Sunday meeting of the St Bernard branch of the Knights of Columbus of America a new president was elected to fill the vacancy from the death of G W Graffe. Frank Fink, previously vice president, was unanimously chosen. John Brannan was elected to succeed Fink as vice president.
Twenty to twenty five men were on a fresh bridge over the Little Miami river at Old Mathias mills when the iron span gave way after heavy rains. Rescue crews rushed to the scene as reports indicate several workers were seriously injured and doctors were summoned for treatment. The bridge was built by the Columbia Bridge company of Dayton.
At a meeting in Indianapolis the Hendricks club adopted resolutions expressing profound sorrow at the death of Hon William Fleming of Fort Wayne in his sixty third year. The club offers sympathy to the widow and children and directs the secretary to forward a copy of the resolutions. A Salimonie Mining and Gas Company board meeting also adopted resolutions of sadness to chronicle the death.
It was learned today that the Hon William Fleming died intestate. He was estimated to be worth 300000 dollars or more with numerous investments, several outside the city. As there is no will, his estate will be settled by administration.
The Evansville Courier notes the death of Hon. William Fleming in Fort Wayne. Fleming, born in Ireland, rose from poverty to become a leading figure in Indiana politics and business. He served as state treasurer elected in 1878, and after political shifts focused on private interests and public service. He was a devoted husband and father of twelve, valued for charity and generosity. The piece honors his democratic principles, modesty, and strength of character, and laments his passing across Indiana communities.
The Fulkerson well on the Salimonie field at Montpelier produced a colossal gas flow on Tuesday afternoon. A roaring exit shot the drill from the mouth as the earth trembled. Test results measured a capacity of twelve million cubic feet per day, making it Indiana’s largest gas well. Superintendent Max Hoffman helped control the blast. the Granger well at Noblesville had previously been the state’s top producer at around eleven million feet daily but is now waterlogged and worthless.
