Lewiston Idaho January 26 The start ling rumor says Robert Ray Hamilton who was thought drowned in the Snake river last June is alive and well Sanford says he learned this from men who worked on the Hamilton Sargent ranch A corpse that resembled Hamilton was placed in the river to fake death Prominent people are said to know the secret that he is alive and may have gone to Australia or Alaska under an assumed name Answapulted by a Maniac Martinsville Ind January 27 Arthur Rinker twenty three of Brooklyn attacks his stepfather Silas D Rinker a violent unsound mind and jailed after neighbors intervene he struck with his fist and tried to brain him with a hatchet.

General Manager Tucker and a conference party head back to Chicago as officials predict quick resolution. Nickel Plate and related lines await word to reinstate Scott amid pending conductors’ actions.
Assistant Secretary Bussey ruled in favor of the claimant in Lorenzo G. Babcock’s case from the One hundred twenty fifth New York Infantry. The record shows he served from August 1862 to May 1864, endured extreme fatigue and exposure, and shot himself during a period of mental derangement developed in service. The department now accepts he died in line of duty, overturning a prior pensions decision.
San Francisco reports preparations underway in Honolulu for the king's return aboard the Charleston. Arches are being erected and citywide decorations planned with a grand Royal Palace ball. Troops volunteers stand by for a parade as the government yacht meets the Charleston off Diamond Head.
James L. Jenkins deputy U S marshal arrived in Indiana in charge of Seven Bears an Indian chief and nephew of Sitting Bull to explain to tribesmen that the country is large and filled with pale faces in an effort to prevent future trouble. Jenkins says five other chiefs in different parts of the U S are being shown the country for the same purpose. Seven Bears a six foot tall savage who understands no English lost his left arm in a fight. They will return to Hartsville then go to Louisville.
Washington January 22 Father Edwin Sorin is reappointed postmaster at Notre Dame Indiana on the recommendation of Professor Hoyne. The Notre Dame post office was established by Henry Clay with Sorin as its first postmaster and there has been no change since. January 24 Ex President Cleveland reportedly pleased by Governor Hill's Senate election and calls Hill a very good senator.
A restless forecast from St Paul and St Hilaire predicts spring violence as Sioux chiefs press for more rations and indemnity. General Miles may lead 200 Sioux to Washington while chiefs, including Young-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses and Crow Dog, debate threats of border war and unanswered grievances.
A series of early 20th century joint legislative ballots report no choice for United States senator in several states including Indiana Illinois New York and Kansas. Palmer leads with 101 votes and Oglesby has 100 while Streeter remains at 3 across multiple ballots.
A London syndicate formed two years ago to build steamships linking England with Chicago. Initial plans stalled by shallow Canadian canals. Recent improvements allow nine foot depths, enabling saltwater ships to navigate the Great Lakes.

Evansville Indiana January 28 Jacob Kron of this county died four months ago leaving an estate valued at over 100000 a wife and two children to inherit it. Yesterday Mrs Kron was found dead in a cistern she had taken her own life fearing loss of property and being sent to the poor house. Other Indiana items note Tom Levy acquitted of counterfeiting in federal court and a sensational elopement in Commus with Miss Ethel Stevens.
J A Wood, Slayer of T J Blount, is found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to twenty one years in Ricamonp Indiana. Verdict came after eight pm with Wood composed but emotional, no statement made to reporters. No immediate appeal filed.
News from New Orleans and Westphalia details a fatal mine disaster at Hibernia colliery in Gelsenkirchen Westphalia. About forty men killed and thirty injured are listed in reports reaching the city. A literary alliance forms in New Orleans. H. Rider Haggard and W. Hosea Ballou sign a cooperative contract on copyright sharing and future joint works, with plans for a joint continental tour. A Texas case notes Colonel George H Snyder shooting his wife after church, with no stated motive. Two youths report a diabolical skating incident in Minwaugzes involving three older boys attempting to “make niggers.”
At 9 o clock this morning a blast at the Mammoth works of H O Frick coke company Mammoth Pa killed many miners. Between sixty and eighty at work at the time eighteen bodies have been recovered by 2 pm and at least fifty are believed dead.
In Wasainaton on January 27 the senate laid aside the election bill by a 30 to 34 vote, signaling a virtual defeat for the Force bill. The house journal was read and approved amid a lively scene as members debated naval appropriations and shouted when the defeat was announced. Tensions rose with strong partisan jibes and calls for roll-call suspension.
A January 26 gas blast in a Lexington Avenue dwelling cellar injured Isaac Conover, Ira B. Conover, Wm. Boveer, and David P. Schwartz. gas fitter Wm. Patterson nearly suffocated while trying to stop the leak. The elder Conover’s injuries are described as very severe and the source notes a match sparked the ignition.
Karl Stevens eighteen, of 85 Whitney Place Buffalo, jumped from Macara Falls New York, after long illness fears and derangement from consumption. He had worked at Lake Shore railroad freight office but was recently unemployed and despondent, four family members had died of consumption.
Gueenvitte D C Jan 23 Wednesday afternoon William White eighteen years old married Miss Lila Langtry fifteen years old. The bride's father angrily had the groom arrested for abduction claiming the girl was under the legal marriage age. The prisoner spent a night in jail but won the father-in-law's favor and returned to his bride yesterday afternoon. Got a well after four years work Mine Jan 27 Over four years ago Indiana's first natural gas well was found at Hatov in this county Frederick Hoover of New Cor ner ten miles from this city with his sons erected a derrick used in sinking a well. He employed only his family, making progress slow but now has one of the best wells in the state.
A prominent New Yorker tells a Fort Wayne citizen that Judge James Cheney is worth about 14 million dollars with 10 million in sight. Cheney, president of Fort Wayne Gas Light, is frugal, active at 80, and travels often, avoiding ostentation while keeping vast holdings in New York City Logansport Defiance and beyond.
The Emmett Club surprised Father M. J. Byrne at Carl J. Weber’s home on Clinton Street with a farewell banquet before his departure for East Chicago. Speeches praised the retiring priest, a mantel clock was presented, and the gathering ended with warm handshakes as Byrne left for Chicago this afternoon. Also notes on Hayden’s land proposal to the Fair Association and Father Weber’s upcoming cathedral position.
Saturday reports the death of eighteen year old Andrew Schearer Jr from injuries in Melborn Ohio after a telegram announced his critical condition. The young man died en route and his remains are to be taken to his Erie street home. Herman Albers of Force street dies of heart disease aged forty eight. He was born in Hanover Germany and served as oar inspector for the Pennsylvania company for twelve years. He belonged to the Knights of St. Charles Benevolent and St. Piso societies and to the Pennsylvania Mutual Insurance Association from which his widow and children will receive benefits. Funeral from St Peters Catholic church on Wednesday at nine in the morning. Died one day old child of Mr and Mrs Charles Petitt of Washington township. Albert Joseph Mohler aged nine died at the Feeble minded Institute. Fred Niedstine of Monroe township dies at St Joe hospital of consumption aged forty five. A two month old child Rosia Klaus dies of lung fever and is buried Monday. Amos Richey’s funeral at 89 West Main Street attended by Rev Leeper. Albert G Hensenl dies. funeral from Nebraska Mission church. Interment at Bullard’s cemetery.
Farmer Henry Forks of St. Joe township was enticed to ride with a stranger who drugged him with a stimulant. The man then unhitched a black horse with a white forehead and white hind legs and rode away. A liberal reward is offered for the thief’s capture.
Perry A Randall sends a party by Wabash train to Kennett Missouri to cut timber on his forests. Twenty men would need many years to clear the dense stand. The crew includes Allen Keller as superintendent and nine other county men with one woman, Jacob Weiss’s wife.
Col C A Zollinger swapped his Crescent paper mill interest at Hartford City for H C Berghoff's stake in the Artificial Ice company. Berghoff will manage the paper mill, while Zollinger returns to Fort Wayne to run the ice business and pursue mayoral prospects.
Sunday evening launch of three week union revival led by Rev. H. H. Wells D D with attendance crowded at Third church. Meetings move to Second and First churches in sequence with daily 10 am and 7 30 pm services. Wells preached on divine law and Christ’s atonement urging conversion.
The Indiana Board of State Charities met in Indianapolis to review alleged mismanagement at the northern prison. It urged doubling the warden's salary to at least 2,500, tightening oversight of contracts, and ensuring prison earnings be turned over to the state. It called for legislative sanction before improvements and closer watch over contract operations.
Mrs William Conant of Detroit arrives in the city to claim her husband who was detained for failing to account for himself. He is in the bottling business and reportedly suffers spells of mental derangement possibly linked to drinking. They plan to return to Detroit that evening.
