In Waxsaw on January 13, farmer John Bruner of Seward township set a fox-trap baited at his corn crib to deter thieves. Morning found Frank Simms trapped by Bruner’s device, pleading to be freed. Neighbors gathered as Bruner released Simms and began repairing the crib.
Secretary Blaine is pressing for the release of Rev. Francis Pensotti a Methodist Episcopal clergyman and American Bible Society agent jailed in Peru for six months. Protests in Callao push for religious worship rights as Peru enforces Catholic state church policy.
Rep Parker of Cleveland sparked a sensation in the house by demanding a resolution condemning federal Indian policy and urging Ohio lawmakers to shift control from the interior department to the war department. In San Francisco on January 10, J. J. Barnett shot Margaret Castine, his partner and housekeeper, after which he attempted suicide. Barnett, employed recently as a keeper at the house of correction, survived though it was feared fatally wounded. Castine died within thirty minutes. Barnett claimed she often asked him to kill her and that intoxication preceded the act.
Hugh Thacker an ex convict of the southern penitentiary and Miss Retta daughter of Robert McClure obtained a marriage license from Rev E R West of the Methodist church and were married in a brief ceremony before the girl s father arrived too late The bride is well connected.
Martinsville Ind Jan 7 Mrs John Stinson wife of a prominent farmer near Danville poured coal oil on her clothing and set it on fire Her husband tried to help and was badly burned She is dying.
One hundred members of the Masonic fraternity consent to skin grafts for fellow Mason John Oscar Dickerson whose recovery from cancer surgery hinges on the procedure.
Lowpoy January 12 Baron Hirsch is said to negotiate with the Sultan for a large Jewish settlement in Palestine. He would pay for a section of the Holy Land to host thousands of persecuted Russian Jews. A Turkish-Hirsch disagreement over a separate Hebrew ruled province is noted.
Boston reports a possible entry of ex-Governor Goddell into New Hampshire's senatorial contest. Republicans urged use of his name after the election, but he said he would decide after the legislative issue. Friends held another recent interview with no public result yet.
Frank T. Mitchell a known horse gambler killed Dolly Mayo a bagnio inmate at 2019 Chestnut Street just before 2 AM and then shot himself. He had visited the house since 11 PM quarrelling with Mayo whose real name is Sallie Hendrickson daughter of Pittsburg parents. Mitchell from Cincinnati.
In Caine Illinois on a Friday evening pupil Fred Cauble age 17 stabbed teacher John J. Finch in the face and chest after an attempted chastisement, killing him. The assailant fled and is at large. Earlier in Hot Springs Arkansas Tom Dennis shot and killed J H Wright on Main street following a prior confrontation. A newborn daughter was born to Mr and Mrs George W Windle of 117 Gay Street.
Deputy inspector Theodore Thorward ordered to inspect a consignment of two carloads of oil in Ligonier. The Patrons of Industry operate depots at Kendallville and other towns to divert trade from Standard Oil, buying oil from Franklin Oil of Pittsburgh at low prices. Officials note farmers may join the boycott against Standard Oil.
Marion January 8. The National Home for disabled veterans at this place is without a governor for the moment. General Devereux’s effects were shipped away Saturday and he left Monday with his two sons. His absence follows the family’s Cincinnati wedding, fueling rumors he has left for good. Veterans report little official word on the situation and say return is not expected.
Four people were killed in Granville county starting Saturday night. Dick Page, a colored laborer, was found in Colleger's plantation field with a gun breech pin in his skull. W T Parker and Brook Bailey were later found dead nearby. On Monday a colored woman on the same plantation was beaten to death. Local fear grows that one killer committed all four crimes.
Archison Kan Jan 8 Henry Elliston state senator from Atchison county and longtime Republican declared in Hansans political circles that John J Ingalls has been rejected by Kansas voters and could only win through corruption He vowed to oppose his reelection to the United States Senate and urged the will of a majority of his constituents be respected.
In Riozwonp Virginia on January 8 the city plans to convert the old brick Confederate white house into a museum and relic preservation site. The project, led by the Ladies Hollywood Memorial association, faced legal objections but gained support as an official museum with Mayor Ellison approving the ordinance.
In Aranna Georgia Mrs B G Peters and her ten year old daughter Agnes died in a house fire at dawn. Four men fled the scene in different directions as bloodhounds followed a trail to the railroad station. authorities believe robbery and murder occurred after a large sum of money was in the house.
The National Linseed Oil Association and White Lead Trust will hold a secret meeting at the Hotel Iroquois to discuss ways to curb competition. Attendees include Alex Fusten of St Louis A Abbott of Chicago president of the oil men R R Colgate Georges A Thayer J A Dean and W P Thompson president of Lead Trust.

Charles Powers faces an affidavit accusing him of assault with intent to kill after beating his stepson Stewart Powers with a wooden stick in Sheldon. The injured youth's condition worsened, prompting jail until results. bond set at $1,000 but not posted. Other local court actions include divorce suit by Mary Rensberger, various warrants and trials scheduled through January, and several civil judgments in Hamilton and surrounding cases.

Meier and Minnie A. Meier for 150 on note and account. The will of Wm B Douglass, deceased veteran conductor, is entered to probate leaving all property to his wife Hannah O Douglass.
The Indianapolis Journal profiles William Oppenheim of Fort Wayne as Allen and Huntington’s representative and a two term lawyer bachelor. It also extols Judge Samuel Hench of Fort Wayne as a tall, militarily bearing newcomer to the legislature with Civil War service and a hard earned legal education.
In Sheldon on a Tuesday morning Charles Powers confronted his stepson Charles Curtis over family matters. Powers struck Curtis with a club, then surrendered to Justice Taylor who fined him for assault. Curtis later demanded Powers be rearrested for assault with attempt to kill. Curtis’s condition worsened and authorities arrested Powers for attempted murder, bringing him to jail that night. Curtis’s injuries are not serious.
The Farmers' Alliance Grange and Federation of Trades committee in Indianapolis seeks bills establishing a county fee and salary system, banning adulterated goods, taxing corporations for special privileges, restricting convict labor, repealing subsidies elections, and assigning gravel roads to road supervisors. It also calls for written hunting permission on private farms and teacher led enumeration of school children.
Frank Boly of St. Joe road told Justice Vancy his son Louis Boly visits the city to fiddle and drink. The son’s drinking leads to violence toward the aged father, who fears further attack. An affidavit for surety of the peace was issued and given to a constable for service.
Emma Williamson filed for divorce from Benjamin F. Williamson in the superior court through attorney R. Lowry.
