The Diocese of Fort Wayne issues Lent regulations for faithful over twenty one. One daily meal allowed on fast days, with specific allowances for flesh on certain days and dispensation rules. Exemptions include the young, sick, and those unable to fast without health risk. A call for sobriety and abstinence, with Good Friday milk and eggs discouraged.
The Gettysburg commission outlined services for the battlefield observance with Bishop Henry C. Potter delivering the welcome to southern troops. George Ticknor Curtis was chosen as the orator, and George Parsons Lathrop to write the poem, promising a memorable occasion in U.S. history.

Representative Compton reports favorable labor committee action on Rep McAdoo's eight hour day bill for letter carriers. The amendment allows eight hours to constitute a day whether consecutive or not, paid pro rata for extra time. McAdoo sees public sympathy for carriers and expects no major objections despite needed staffing increases in free delivery cities.
Inquirers report sixty nine editor responses from Illinois to the Chicago Evening Journal poll on president and governor preferences. Republicans back Lincoln and Blaine, Democrats favor Cleveland, with small counts for Black Harper St. John and others. three editors abstain.
New York Feb 8 General Sherman dismissed Wade Hampton's long Columbia burning article as old and unfounded stating he did not burn Columbia and that Hampton knows the truth. He said the matter is not worth the trouble and he was bound for Richmond when Hampton allegedly sought to bolster his stance.
Cuiiaco February 8 Amos J Snell a wealthy Chicago real estate magnate was found dead in his bed at 425 Washington Boulevard. A servant heard a pistol shot and police believe intruders gained entry by removing a paneled door to reach safes in Snell’s rooms. Snell died from two gunshot wounds, likely during a planned burglary.
Joseph Baker of Warsaw won the contract to erect the new Columbia City stone courthouse at a bid of 124 700 using Bedford Hoosier stone. Other bidders included Christian Boseker Fort Wayne and McCormack Redmond Columbus Indiana. Architect Brent Tolan estimated 125 000 and work will start when weather allows.
Esquire Daniel Ryan presided at police court sentencing six vagrants to jail. Frank Smith and Charles Stoshoff admitted drunkenness and sang as they left. Albert Stenner received a fifteen day sentence for larceny after theft of a Pullman car lantern. Charles Johnson of Detroit was caught with a stolen seal skin cloak and related items. bail set at $500 as his case was continued for attorney prep.
Dr. B. Woodworth in Riverside received a letter from Colton reporting John McCain, once proprietor of Home billiard hall, in ragged condition and intoxicated. He claimed Los Angeles robbers took his watch, chain, and money, showed a forehead scar, then sought a cash loan, saying he wishes to return home.
William Walden a switchman in the east Pittsburg and Fort Wayne yards was crushed between cars while attempting a coupling. An approaching car wedged him, irons catching his stomach. He was carried to a nearby boarding house. He is 28 from West Penbrook New York where his mother lives.
Louis Krohn testifies about a director syndicate that misused Metropolitan bank funds totaling 500000 to 600000. Directors Decamp Means Roth Duckworth and Gerke faced exposure. Decamp surrendered and awaited bonds while Krohn secured rival bank support to stop further losses. Cashier Edwards outlines a postclaim balance of 820000 for stockholders, about 82 percent loss.
Boston reports Hop Lung Sing, a Chelsea laundryman, lies in a coffin at Tinkham's awaiting a five day resurrection ritual. Two Chinese men incited the rite with mystic rites and live hens, but the man did not arise. Local undertaker prepared for burial as the event passed.

Commodore Foote writes from Mexico describing Paso del Norte and Chihuahua life in 1888. He notes adobe towns, the Mexican Central railroad, street scenes with mendicants, burros loaded with produce, and a 5 000 spectator bullfight. He praises the climate and reports good business for his party.
In Missouri on February 9 police arrested Annie Stevenson a twelve year old for vagrancy. The girl has been married twice and bore two children by her first husband Robert Patterson whom she wed at ten. Patterson was seventeen. After hardship she married John Stevenson age twenty three three months ago. Stevenson left her recently and she travelled to St Joseph seeking him. The youth appears younger than twelve and police placed her aboard a train toward Grundy County to her father’s home. She says she still loves Stevenson and blames poverty for her plight.
Judge Woods receives telegram noting writ hearing due to incomplete record. Hearing on writ of error to be held in Indianapolis on Feb 20, possibly moved to Feb 24. prisoners remain in custody with no bail.
Andrew Thieme a pioneer Broadway grocer died Thursday night at 10 20 he was sixty years old and leaves a wife and five children John Thieme Charley Thieme Mary Thieme and Mrs Charles Haag among his kin He lived in Fort Wayne for nearly fifty years and was a respected citizen known for upright character and public involvement
The 1887 railway data for Indiana lists engineers 3155 workers with 335 dollars average pay and various other classes with specific headcounts and wages. It notes a high share of deaths and injuries caused by workers own carelessness versus external causes, and mentions Kendallville’s Fort Wayne building association.
From Liberty township on John Spence’s farm two men Satten and Hale started a traction engine for wood work when a boiler explosion tore through the woods. By the blast J T Smith and Hale were killed or gravely injured while bystanders suffered injuries in the fatal accident reported from Wanasu.
Dan Shordon represents Deering Harvesting in Fort Wayne as canvassers Kenry Gillian and Herman Hohnholz promote the All Steel Grain Saving Binder. Two carloads were delivered, crowds packed the hall, a grand collation fed guests, and J D Truett led Indiana sales from a modest start to a booming 1887 total of three quarters of a million dollars with growth expected in 1888. Truett, ill recently, traveled to Fort Wayne to witness the campaign opening.
Warden Patten filed his first quarterly report showing earnings of 18035.14 and expenditures of 17722.26 for the current year. Of the appropriation he used 4638.20 for debts contracted under Howard management and 297.98 of excess receipts were so applied. Patten believes the institution will soon be self supporting with a surplus for improvements. Senator Barrett’s investigation of former prison officials is yielding fruit and credit to him. Two great enemies Hood’s Sama parilis and impure blood. The latter is defeated by the medicine.
