Shaw urges currency bill before House committee
Secretary Shaw testified before the House banking and currency committee urging a high taxed credit currency with a five percent rate. He argued for greater currency elasticity and criticized the American Bankers Association plan as insufficiently elastic, noting potential $200,000,000 in national bank notes but limited redemption. He advocated broader elasticity and warned that private banks would avoid redeeming national notes. The bankers’ plan would allow national banks to issue $25,000 extra notes per $100,000 capital at 2.5% and an additional $12,500 at 5% interest.
