Monongah Mine Blast Threatens Hundreds The Worst Coal Disaster
An explosion in Consolidated Coal Nos 6 and 8 near Monongah West Virginia killed or entombed hundreds as flames and gas hampered rescue efforts. Early reports put the death toll from three hundred to over five hundred with about a thousand miners at work in the two mines. Rescue teams faced dangerous conditions as air was filled with gas and smoke and the scene remained chaotic. Officials and physicians hurried to the site while fans worked to clear foul air.
