Indianapolis December 3 James Zimmermann of New York general agent for American Express testified before the Indiana railroad commission in the express rate inquiry. He admitted past rate reductions in the east but could not confirm a corresponding rise in business or earnings. He said rate changes were directed by local superintendents and that lower rates would likely apply where population is dense and business would offset the cut.
Louisville December meeting of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners taxation committee is convened by State Insurance Commissioner Henry O Préwitt. He invites association members and life and fire insurance company representatives to attend and assist in uniform tax law efforts.
Weston as pace maker guides a six man Chicago group on a sixty hour walk from Milwaukee Athletic Club to Chicago. Mayor Becker of Milwaukee, Alderman Badenoch, and Chairman Zeller accompany. four autos follow, group travels at about four miles per hour chasing a $1000 wager.
A westbound Clover Leaf passenger train collided with a stopped freight engine in Kokomo Indiana. Several injured include W L Bogan mail clerk Frankfort Thomas Campbell Anna Parvis L C Firth and Dr J C Wright. All taken to Maplewood hospital for treatment.
Secretary of War William Howard Taft and his party reached St Petersburg from Moscow amid a warm reception. He met officials including Foreign Minister Iswolsky and Grand Dukes, but could not visit the Duma due to the late arrival. Local papers described Taft as “General Taft” and noted cheers as his embassy carriage tours the city.
Pittsburg Pa Dec 3 Twenty seven bodies were recovered in the Naomi coal mine at Fayette City and officials fear the final toll will top forty with miners predicting up to fifty. Rescue squads fought crowds while Coroner Hagan received victims and work continued through thirty six entries amid gas danger and threat of a second explosion.
Smoke pours from the Fremont mine shaft as rescuers abandon hopes for the eleven miners trapped since Saturday. Americans James Drew Joseph Manley Daniel O'Brien and L E Wilson are among the victims. the rest are Italians and Austrians. O'Brien and Wilson are married, Wilson with eight children. Rescue efforts were halted by dangerous smoke and heat, though attempts to reach the three hundred foot level continued.
In Washington Indiana three anglers were thrown from a capsized life boat on White River. Jacob Sahm and William Maher drowned while Patrick Kelley clung to the boat for about half a mile downstream before rescue.
The Mount Temple struck the LaHave ledges in a heavy snowstorm and may be a total loss. About 480 passengers and crew were ferried to shore on Iron Bound island or transported to Halifax. 150 reached the city. Among those aboard were 206 women and children. rescue involved fishing schooners Hazel Virginia and Guide and tug Trusty. Immigrants include Austrians Poles Gallicans and Russians bound for Canadian points.
In Dayton Ohio on December 3 a Dayton Xenia traction car ran out of control on a steep hill east of the city. It overturned at a curve injuring a group of more than twenty women, with several may die from their injuries. Injured were taken to Dayton Hospital. Names include Mrs R A Wenzel Mary Rogan Mrs Chas Spindell Mrs John Godfrey and Mrs George Jeffries.
Washington reports former Senator Henry Gassaway Davis, 84, a West Virginia multimillionaire and 1900s vice presidential candidate, will marry Maud Ashford, daughter of the late Mahlen Ashford. The match would bring immense wealth and may disrupt family ties, with wedding plans possibly before year’s end.
In United States criminal court, Mrs. Annie M. Bradley was acquitted of the murder of former Utah Senator Arthur M. Brown. The lone holdout juror, Julius H. Prigg, joined the others after a long deliberation, finalizing the not guilty verdict just before midnight.

Detroit reports detail the collapse of Chelsea based State Treasurer Frank P. Glazier and Glazier Stock Co. with about 600000 of Glazier debt. The Commercial Bank of Stockbridge also closed. deposits of 100000 to 200000 are suspected. G H Gay closed Chelsea Savings to prevent a run. Chelsea fears for local merchants.
