In Washington on August 17 the House begins a session with speeches touched on the national bank system. Republicans plan a caucus to address committee ties and the repeal clause amid ongoing debate about the bill and its dangers.
Amid Bushy Fork forests in Douglas County a mob of about 250 farmers hunts Lon G. Meyers charged with assault. He allegedly tied a young girl, assaulted his wife and child. Meyers wounded a pursuer and hid in a swamp as the posse surrounds the area hoping to force capture or surrender. Local man W. P. Skinner is confined at home ill.
In the senate August 22 Senator Voorhees Democrat of Indiana voiced strong opposition to bi metamallism and urged repeal of the Sherman act. He defended Cleveland and Chicago platform finance, defended silver coinage on equal terms with gold, attacked banks and the national debt, and urged a system of state banks with federal note issuance to restore currency stability. The speech defended pensions as currency and warned against bond-driven credit, ending with a call for reforms and national prosperity.
Unvana Ohio August 19 Friends of Governor McKinley move to solidify support for a 1896 Republican nomination. General Gibson says McKinley will be re-elected this fall and defeat Larry Neal by over 30,000 votes on the protection vs free trade issue, signaling a path to the presidency.
St Paul August 19 The Jack Dempsey Dick Burge bout is off as manager Tuthill confirms Dempsey is not in his right mind and will forfeit the $4100 already up. Dempsey and Tuthill left for Chicago where he will be watched closely by friends.
Reports from Tixtlas Guerrero state state that during cleaning yesterday prisoners attacked the guard and twenty escaped. Two convicts were killed in the clash. City of Mexico dispatches note the incident occurred in Tixtlas.
In Brinccroft Ohio on August 19 two young daughters of a dairyman were killed instantly. Four other children around the same age were badly injured when a threshing machine engine failed on a steep ascent and ran down, catching the group before they could escape.
Evanaville Indiana August 17 Jacob Schultz wife and four children drank from an unused road well while moving from St Phillips. They suffered violent vomiting and diarrhea as three of them may die. They are under medical care at Jacob Kohl’s home. An examination will be made to determine poison from vines in the well.
In Decatur Descartes Ill Aug 22 considerable feeling arose over Rev Marcus Wagner pastor of the German Lutheran church barring mourners from attending a funeral wearing secret order badges. Mrs Arneldine Faber's funeral was held there with only German Lutherans admitted while Grand Army men and Odd Fellows faced outside restrictions. The Woman's Relief Corps members arrived as a body but were denied entry due to badges.
State Health Officer Porter bans all quarantine in Florida Pensacola travel restrictions are lifted. A public safety committee reports no yellow fever in ten years and no local cases. The navy yard sanitary cordon will be removed by Surgeon Magruder today.
Governor Horace Boies is to be presented to the Democratic state convention in Des Moines on August 23 as the party choice for United States senator. A Des Moines conference decided the course after consulting Boies, who does not seek the governorship or senator’s office but will not refuse the party’s call.
Rockford shoe factory and W F John Barnes machinists resume operations tomorrow. Nelson Knitting Talcott and company watch factory and Trahern Pump company will re employ full forces by September 4. County commissioners settle Illinois Gravel road cases with payments due September and November. Mrs N Tyler of Boston visiting Rockford.
At a recent track meet gamblers ran "skin" dice games drawing suckers, including a saloon keeper who lost money and borrowed more. Frank Bogash warned against playing, was struck by a cappere, splitting his lip, as bystanders intervened. Cooler heads kept the crowd from further violence.
The Indiana monument commission votes to add four figures to the soldiers monument at Vincennes. George Rogers Clark will symbolize the revolutionary era, William Henry Harrison the Indian period, Mahlon D. Mason the Mexican War, and Oliver P. Morton the Civil War. General Manson, about eighty, of Crawfordsville, will portray the Mexican War figure.
The Terre Haute fair reports six events with trotting and pacing, judges cited inconsistencies, highlighted 2:15 pace won by W. W. P. Forest Wilkes Rosewater Jocko, and 2:28 trot results. A death list tallies twelve weekly burials including infants and elderly, with cholera infantum and fever noted. Congressman McNagy piece notes Perry Randall, Fort Wayne notable, to not seek renomination.
The Chicago and Central Indiana Electric Railway company once based in Noblesville dissolved after money market constraints. E J Pennington, famed for Mount Carmel air ship ambitions, failed to secure capital and left workers unpaid after three weeks. Franchises existed at Noblesville and Tipton with offices and crews but no actual spending.
In Bascom Ohio a family feud exploded as Perry Osterholt lies dying after being struck in the temple with a stone and Fred Osterholt is badly injured. The Flack cousins and their father clashed with the Osterholts at the latter’s home, scenes of armed beating, razor injuries, and a pursuit by police and posses across Seneca county. James and Lloyd Flack remain at large as authorities pursue the suspects.
Thieves broke into Christian Baade’s river road farm near the Beaver Mill and stole a gold watch a chain and a charm bearing the initials OB worth about $80. Beer bottles were emptied, leaving scattered papers and a chisel used to pry shutters. Sheriff holds the burglary tool while officers search for the culprits. Also reported: an assault on Thomas Waltham near Three Hes, leaving him injured. investigation continues with no suspects named.
