The president appointed MacGraw Coxe of New York envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary to Guatemala and Nicaragua, replacing the late Pierce M. B. Young. Coxe, 39, born in Alabama, long based in New York, Yale 1879 graduate, ex assistant U S district attorney for the southern district of New York, and former chairman of the New York democratic campaign committee in 1892.
Two large mills including Belling Mills at Niles and Allen Prixe Mills near Providence Paovintscs reopened after three weeks idle, resuming operations and pledging to employ 2,000 workers. In Berea Ohio on August 3 at 1 am a loud explosion woke residents as dynamite damaged a local building. The owner’s conduct was described as obnoxious and contributing to the incident, with reports noting near demolition of the structure. Police investigated the blast and assessed property damage.
Peter Schutz, florist of Hammoxp, Indiana, sues the Michigan Central Monon Chicago and Nickel Plate railway companies for 15000. He says safety gates were lowered and he was knocked from a wagon seat, losing teeth, causing nervous shock. He seeks compensation for damages to salaries and distress. A separate incident at Shelbyville involved a frightened horse.
A tidal wave five miles long struck Haichau in Kiang Su on Sunday, drowning about 4000 people and destroying numerous villages. Cattle perished and rice fields were submerged, threatening famine. Haichau lies opposite Yu Chau island on the Yellow Sea with Kiang Su a fertile silk exporting province. Nan King is the province's principal city.
A Big Four line wreck at 5:30 am north of Indianapolis injured four men and ruined a parlor car loaded with J. Bush of Louisville horses. None of the four listed horses are expected to race again. the stable valued at 260,000. horses included Maid Queen Sally Bronson King Henry Minnie DeFoe and Buster.
Carl G. James of Grand Forks North Dakota claims he was taken from Port Huron in 1863 or 1864 by Canadian Indians and later moved west with the captors. He learned his origin two years ago and seeks his family while bearing scars from a stake burning during the Northfield massacre. A witness says James does not know his real name.
A Goshen to Plymouth electric railway survey is finished and capital is ready. The line is pitched as part of a northern Indiana electric road system. The power house will be built in Plymouth.
A Santa Fe train and the California express collided on a sixty foot trestle between Dean Lake and Bosworth Missouri. Both engines and cars were thrown from the track. engineer and fireman of No 1 escaped, while the No 1 engine crew and the Heady engineer perished. Passengers were unhurt or lightly shaken, as injured were transported to Topeka and Chicago for treatment. Frank Mullady of Chicago, a witness, described the terror and quick aid to the injured.
Washington August 4 warrants for 1894 sugar bounties were issued under the 5 million deficiency act. Proved claims were pro rated at 84 percent, with 490 warrants issued and three withheld, totaling 4,988,036 dollars for the 190 claims. maple sugar excluded. The matter involves prior comp troller resistance and a Supreme Court ruling ordering payment.
In Wairtixe Indiana August 4 a bank run hit Henry Schrage's private bank as Hungarian and Slav depositors demanded withdrawals. Though deposits carried sixty days notice for withdrawal, Schrage honored every demand. Schrage, noted real estate owner in Whiting and Chicago, is son of William Schrage who recently faced a $50,000 bond robbery in Chicago.
Indiana's Republican Chairman Captain J. K. Gowdy, after stomach inflammation and perilous days, has recovered enough to travel to Indianapolis and resume charge of the Indiana campaign. Meanwhile, in Rome City Ohio Indiana and Michigan Epworth Leagues held a reunion with a festival of songs and oratory for over 5,000 young church workers. The program included a school of methods led by Rev. W H Leather and speeches by Rev. A J Preston and Rev Wilbur Warner.

Multiple deaths include Mrs. Joseph Rhoades in Sterling Colo, Peter Albrecht 45, Ella Montgomery 20, Pauline Heller in Washington DC, and many infants from cholera infantum, dysentery, or other illnesses. Funeral services held at Zion's Lutheran and Emanuel's Lutheran churches. locations include Fort Wayne and Cleveland with numerous family ties and church affiliations noted.
Crowds arrived from Lima, Plymouth, Warsaw, and other towns via Pittsburg and Findlay lines to enjoy Robison Park on a sunny Sunday. Special trains from Pennsylvania and Lake Erie and Western, plus local vehicles, carried guests to the event as a parade of amusements and a well ordered program by Consolidated Street Railway. An accident on a canal bridge injured several riders when a car left the track. Motorman Cox failed to see a missing light and the car swung off the curve onto the embankment, sending Mrs Rider, Mrs Riblet, Mrs Flynn, T. J. Schuler, and others to medical care while traffic was delayed about an hour.
A farmer Thomas Hall is shot in his Huntertown home by a tramp and lies fatally wounded. A mob pursues the assailant into a cornfield as sheriffs and deputies search with bloodhounds, while Hall's son Howard is also wounded. A man claiming to be Fran Faith is held for questioning. a wider arrest is expected as the hunt continues. The town remains in a rage over the attack.
