Governor to Decide Today the Case of a Convicted Banker
In Wabash on May 18, local lawyers pressed for a gubernatorial pardon for Thomas Arnold the South Whitley banker whose firm failed in the panic of 1908 and cost depositors about 130000. Arnold was convicted of taking deposits while insolvent and sentenced to one year though two was the minimum. An appeal to the supreme court failed and a long Whitley County petition sought executive clemency arguing he was not the bank’s principal. The governor granted a fifteen day stay after sentencing and the clock runs out today.
