United States warships form a flying squadron preparing for possible deployment toward Cuban waters amid unusual activity from submarine and surface vessels. The move signals heightened readiness and potential contingency measures in the Caribbean region.
New York May 9 Admiral Bunces north Atlantic squadron lies at an anchorage off Tompkinsville awaiting two hours notice to raise anchor and sail. Ships are kept ready with fires banked and coal prepared, drills intensify daily as Washington cipher messages arrive, and a Cuban waters move rumor swirls among officers. Eight ships are in port with new arrivals Cincinnati Montgomery at Tompkinsville and Indiana Newark Terror Navy Yard. Katahdin joins lower bay on 15th, Terror 18th, Indiana and Newark 22nd.

John Schafer, a wealthy Grand Island farmer, was attacked by his wife who doused him with vitriol after he refused forgiveness. The blinding injury was avoided by quick medical care. the wife disappeared and is believed to have fled toward the river.
Jackson fans supported their team as Umpire Popkay ordered Fort Wayne captain George Teabeau from the game amid taunts.
