Local party members selected HD LAN as a delegate to represent the district at the Republican National Convention. The selection confirms LAN as a participant in formal nominating events and related party proceedings.
Avora Indiana March 19 Special. The republican district convention held here drew huge crowds and trains. J L Conlogue was chosen secretary while F D Merritt won chairman. J D Leighty nominated for congress and endorsed by McKinley supporters. Law elected delegate to the national convention over McDonald in multiple counties. Fort Wayne Auburn and surrounding towns buzz with the political event and McDonald absent in New York.
John T. Woodward, an ex convict now in Indianapolis, sues J. B. Ford, Johnson & Co. in Michigan City for 600 dollars. He was paroled after embezzlement and held to serve eight months. writs of habeas corpus and a Supreme Court ruling found illegal detention. First such case in the state.

John Wolfrum resigns as a Pennsylvania office stenographer to start new business. Nickel Plate pay car arrives. long distance telephone installed at Master Mechanic Morse’s office. Patrick Reddin, a Defiance saloonkeeper, is killed after trying to board Nickel Plate train No 45 at Continental.
Senator Quay opens the Cuban question in the senate arguing no war cause from Congress opinion on Cuba. Senator Stewart of Nevada urges passage of the resolution. A vote cannot be held today.
A morning hold up near Tulane and Goschen on Southern Pacific express No 19 ended with a clash that left Sheriff Daggett critically wounded and Deputy Reed shot in the shoulder. A robber was captured and linked to the Dalton gang.
A massive morning blaze in Providence Rhode Island caused about half a million dollars in damage. The Masonic building was a total loss and a neighboring property suffered heavy damage. The opera house and Narragansett hotel were saved only by the fire department's efforts. The water tower was narrowly saved as walls fell. Fresh fish and lobsters are delivered daily to Jackson's at 140 Calhoun, phone 314.
Mrs. William B Stocks aged 33 died suddenly of heart failure at her New Haven home yesterday morning. She leaves a husband and two young children. Funeral arrangements were to be announced.
Officer Cooling hidden in Lehman Book and News store for a week caught a well regarded young man in the act of stealing $1.50. He was arrested and bound over to the circuit court in $100 bond after his father paid. His engaged status and family ties add shock to the case.
In Indianapolis on March 19 Philip Hauk of Montgomery County, recently charged in a serious incident with Grace McClam mock, entered a church funeral service. Parents of Grace McClammock rose and left as Hauk faced a hostile crowd. The minister paused, congregants moved toward him, and police later removed him after his mother’s pleas failed to stop the ruckus. Hauk had been arrested earlier but freed on bail.
Market notes from Chicago produce desk dated March 19 show closing quotes for March at 60 and 60.5 cents, May and July contract openings around 62 cents with minor shifts, and bids near 29 to 29.4 cents. September and other months show varied quotes including 31.4 cents in opening trades.
The Fort Wayne Brotherhood of Painters and Decorators, once a strong local union, dissolved after 1891 amid strikes and intra member strife. Al Johnson, a brakeman on the Pittsburgh road, reports being robbed of 45 dollars in a Columbia Street saloon last Tuesday night. He says he entered for a drink, joined pool with loungers, got intoxicated, and was then taken to his boarding house without the money.

Hon L J Bobilya gave a forceful address, followed by S M Foster who spoke due to absences of J M Robinson and H B Berghoff.
