Honest Dollar Debate in Waterloo on Silver Question
In Waterloo on June 26 W E B Mason of Chicago and W J Bryan of Nebraska debated the silver question at the Chautauqua opening. Governor Boies presided and Bryan argued for bimetallism while Mason defended the single gold standard. The exchange spanned two hours with strong applause for both sides as Mason predicted a GOP victory and Bryan urged that the honest dollar should not rely on gold alone.

In circuit court Judge O Rourke disposed of four pending cases. Herbert Bicknese pleaded guilty to stealing a garden hose and was sentenced to one year in prison. Frank Houck confessed to luring two boys into burglary and received sixty days in jail. George Murford got five days and Will Atkin ten days. Oliver Rohle, freed on bond for a prior assault, was released after security was posted. Ed Etchey, who stole brass from the city pumping works, was bound over to circuit court in 200 dollars and jailed.
