The 22 year journey to America led to marriage with Anna Richter in 1852 and the opening of Fort Wayne's first brewery on East Washington Street known for years as Hartman's. Survived by children J. H. Hartman Theresa Peters Regina Wall Anna Kulm and Sister Mary Nicolina, he helped found St Mary's Benevolent Society and joined Allen County Old Settlers.
