Washington January 23. The postmaster general orders the removal of Georgetown Indiana postmistress Miss L M Mottweiler after inspectors found years of Georgetown mail hoarded in her office and misrouted letters. Joseph R Clipp named her successor amid no citizen complaints during her tenure.
Fort Wayne Superintendent Liggett received a Chicago police notice about a man found dead in a vacant Chicago cellar. He doubts the deceased is John B. Schmidt, last seen by his sons in Fort Wayne on December 25. A photo is sent to Inspector Fitzpatrick for coroner comparison.
Fort Wayne is paying about $29,000 yearly for 240 electric lights while other cities with municipal ownership report lower costs. A board study compares costs, cites Bloomington and Logansport, and argues ownership could save around $10,000 annually.
In Milwauker Wisconsin a push for a three cent streetcar fare tops spring campaign talk. Business leaders back the idea while Democrats plan to push it as an election issue, with Republicans unlikely to support such a move. Voters already express satisfaction with service but favor lower fares.
