Legislative Review highlights toughened criminal penalties bills
Sen. Richard A. Walsh of River Forest cosponsors a trio of bills raising minimum sentences for felonies and expanding parole review. The package includes a life or 25 year minimum for murder and higher minimums for Class 1 through 4 felonies, plus 17 year parole eligibility for long-term inmates. Other bills permit periodic parole board reviews and rehearals. The column notes bipartisan support, mentions Gov. Thompson's possible sign, and covers related tax, auto parts theft, and capital punishment actions.
