Forest Park aims to receive 150000 from HUD to arrest commercial area decline in its central business district. The village submits the code enforcement grant application June 7 with 60 working days for HUD decision and may fund demolition repairs and accessibility upgrades as part of a broader effort.
Triton College board raises tuition by 2 per semester hour effective fall 1976. Nonresident, the cost for full-time students increases by 60 to 75 dollars per term. Board cites higher costs and partial state funding as reasons.
Forest Park's Fourth of July celebration may be pared back due to slower donations. Director James Sarno reported at the May 27 park board meeting that the program would cost about 3700 dollars, with 2200 dollars earmarked for fireworks, yet only around 2225 dollars has been received to date. The event relies entirely on private contributions.
Sarno said needed funds may exceed donations by about 900 dollars as six individuals have contributed. The board may add another band and a Hawaiian show if money can be raised. They approved buying a used John Deere tractor for 5000 dollars plus 300 to 500 for transport, with a hoped June 10 sale. financing was tabled. Dave Novak, recreation superintendent, underwent knee surgery May 28 at Loyola Maywood. Tuition and graduation fees of 100 dollars were approved for three police personnel attending academy since October.
Forest Park Health Inspector Sandra Boy announced the village will be among the first in the state to receive swine influenza vaccine when mass doses arrive. The distribution date is uncertain but August is predicted. 150 volunteers including many nurses have signed up. Vaccine administration will use "guns" supplied by Cook County, capable of about 350 people per hour. The board discussed outreach to the elderly and shut-ins, door-to-door flyers, and club talks. Larry Kaercher was elected board chair, replacing Gene Julian who retired to California.
