First United Church of Christ Celebrates 100th Anniversary

The First United Church of Christ in Duriey October marks its centennial with a month of events led by Rev. Bry ant Drake and others. Activities include rededication, Community and Denomination services, a Centennial Dinner, and a Confirmation Sunday, plus a historical booklet and extensive church improvements completed over a year.

St Bernardine Allows Sunday Evening Mass for 1965

Archbishop John P. Cody grants permission to experiment with Sunday evening Mass. For the rest of 1965 St Bernardine will hold a Sunday service at 7 30 p m starting on December 3. Forty Hours Devotion opens with a solemn Mass at 10 15 a m.

Dope crime wave sparks string of forest park drug arrests

Police halted a spree of narcotics incidents over two weeks. Jay Rose, 19, fled toward Chicago after wrecking five cars near St Bernardine’s. he was nabbed there and charged with reckless driving and narcotics influence. Oak Park suspects Karl Canavan and James Schremser, both teens, were caught with two packs of marijuana. bonds set at 3000 and 1000. A lookout duo, Lucille Tilo and Edward Laurenza, were detained with Raymond Ope after a botched narcotics store break in Melrose Park. Ope fled but later was arrested. Pope, a longtime addict, boasted about a $100 daily habit. all face court action around October 1.

Holy Hour Schedule Updates With Mass Time Changes

The customary Holy Hour in the evening will include the 7 30 p m Mass. Tuesday’s Solemn closing features a procession with the Blessed Sacrament and the Litany of the Saints. A visiting priest will give the homily each night. The 6 30 am to 10 15 am Mass times stay the same but the last morning Mass is noon and the 11 30 am and 12 45 pm Masses have been dropped.

Proviso East high school sets a two day homecoming on Friday and Saturday October 8 9. Highlights include a pep rally, guest speaker Ted Wheeler Olympic and world champion, parade of floats, homecoming queen announcement, football games against Highland Park, and a 4 p m dance with Al Ford and his band. Student leaders from Maywood Forest Park and Broadview organize activities and committees.

Dr Gade Suffers Stroke in Minnesota

Dr. Lou Wallace Gade, former pastor of Forest Park Presbyterian Church, suffered a cerebral thrombosis stroke at his retirement home in Cook Minnesota. He is mentally alert but partially paralyzed on one side after a 30 year tenure serving the local congregation.

Juvenile Offenders On Rampage In Forest Park

A Forest Park village council meeting heard a plea from Robert Marin for a full time juvenile officer to curb rising youth offenses amid narcotics use by youths aided by Chicago pushers. Mayor Mohr pledged action as finances allow and discussed traffic officer duties while a related storm sewer project stalled over property easements. A humorous note capped the session as a peddler without a license clashed with police.
