Rev and Mrs A G Wenninger, leaving Forest Park for Waverly to oversee an orphan’s home, were honored at a farewell reception by St Pan’s Lutheran last Friday. Seven years of service as pastor and a plan to aid orphans were cited as the reasons for departure. Speakers included Rev C Reinhold and Conrad Michalsky. Rev S W Fuchs will supply until a new pastor arrives.
Rev. Fred J Schnell, recently appointed to the Community Methodist church of Forest Park by the Rock River conference, began pulpit work in Matchuret last Sunday with the sermon Irresistible Religion. He will preach next Sunday on Take Away That Ugly Black Thing, coming from St Janes Methodist of Chicago where he served as associate pastor for three years.
The candidate comes from multiple churches including First Methodist in Chicago and First Methodist in Bandon Oregon, with a solid background in administration and youth work. He has six years as sales manager for a major Pacific coast health firm, organized the Rock River Conference Epworth League, and led athletic programs while guiding youth teams. The Parsonage at 620 Hale Avenue was redecorated by the Ladies' Aid Society, and the minister and his family arrived Wednesday to join the congregation.
Memorial to the late Bishop Samuel Fallows, former rector of St. Paul's Reformed Episcopal Church, will be unveiled Sunday October 21 at 3 p.m. on the Mallows plot in Forest Home Cemetery. Bishop Robert J. Rudolph of Philadelphia will deliver the address. Members of patriotic and civic groups including the 2d Infantry, Grant Post of the G A R, Woman's Relief Corps, Colonial Dames of America, Knights Templar, Masons, and Chicago clergy are expected to attend.
Straus & Company credits Forest Park as a leading suburb builder for October 1928 in a Chicago report comparing 1928 to 1927. Wilmette, Forest Park, Whiting, Hell ewood and other suburbs show strong gains with double digits and hundreds of percent increases in building activity.
North Side Boosters planned a dance at the Masonic temple for Saturday evening. The village council met Monday and passed a resolution asking Illinois to grant the privilege to connect Fifteenth and Sixteenth street pavement with the state pavement on Har Tent avenue. The board of local improvement appointed William Ziggler of 837 Harlem avenue as inspector of the pavement, replacing Mr. Kline whose fine prevents service. Wiener is the other inspector, appointed a week ago.
Twelve metal signs will be erected at intersections along Fors ter Pack by the Forest Park Kiwanis Club. A sample sign was displayed at the meeting held Tuesday evening at the Makanic topple, where members debated wording. Each sign measures eight by two feet.
E A Cogley, ex president of Maywood Lions, gave a fine address before Forest Lions at their noon luncheon Thursday on the relation of service clubs to the community. Next week will feature William A Waster of the Chicago Lions. A complete pageant report was not ready.
John Christianson, new A and P manager on Migin and Madison, was robbed of 240 dollars last Monday morning after a revolver threat. A Desplaines Ave saloon, Otto Sturmers, saw 175 taken from the cash register at midnight. Three south town stores reported thefts Tuesday morning with losses totaling unknown but Charles Plummer fixed at 113.65.
Mayor Gold received a letter from C Ki Batashelet geographer in Washington asking for current Forest Park boundary changes over the past ten years and an estimate of the present population. The mayor believes about 18,000 residents live in Forest Park now.
Forest Park Republican Club meets at Forest Park Screen Co. office to plan a dance at Legion Hall on Friday October 26 with Judge Swanson and other candidates expected to attend. H D Scluwmacher presides. C R Miller of Maywood attends with Proviso Hoover Emerson Swarson Republican club colleagues to discuss campaign.
A Republican women’s meeting is planned for Tuesday at 2 p m in Moose Temple Maywood. Speakers from National and State Republican headquarters will address the group. A reader and patriotic songs are on the program, with Forest Park women urged to attend.
The Scouts of troop WL held a good meeting Friday from 7 to 9 30 with Scoutmaster Edward Roth returning after an absence since late June A number of visitors attended and the American Legion Drum and Bugle corps joined at Grant School to practice The scoutmaster led drills while legion members kept time on drums for Joe Pfang.
Forest Park's annual Community Chest drive is progressing with pledges ahead of expectations though many homes remain to be canvassed. Precinct captains fear completion by Saturday night as calls continue and workers from both households and businesses press for pledges.
Committees were formed for Walton League Kee est Park Chapter at a Harlem State Savings Bank meeting. Twelve directors attended. New committees include Entertailment Conservation Clean Streets and Membership with chairpersons named. A chapter meeting is set for the second Thursday evening of each month.
The Graf Zeppelin airship will carry mail between Friedrichshafen and Lakehurst with prepaid rates of 1 and 40 cents for letters and cards to Europe. Miss Mary Alelsen will lead the first story hour of the season on Saturday morning October 27 at 10 o clock. The event features several Forest Park speakers and actors active in dramatic work. The Forest Park Library board and Mrs Ida Langlesy preside. Miss Catharine Chouffet plans to attend the Miters library association meeting in Danville October 17 to 19. An essay contest for Children’s Book Week is sponsored with the Forest Park Women’s Club, encouraging reading with prizes for the best paper on My Favorite Book, open to the 7th and 8th grades.
H. J. Thoendel a well known Madison Street jeweler was killed near the Harlem avenue crossing of the Westchester Trail. The 70 year old immigrant, who had run the Rentner Jewelry store, left his shop to reach the loop and was struck while attempting to clear the track. Survived by wife, children, brother Julius, and sister-in-law, with funeral arrangements pending.
William F Schwedler died at his home 140 Desplaines Avenue Saturday October 1 at 1 05 p m aged 23. He was born in Forest Park and attended Grant school, active St Peters Lutheran Church member. He leaves a widow, one sister Helen Haas 138 Desplaines Avenue and one brother Arthur at home. Funeral from the home Wednesday October 17 at 2 pm with service at St Peters Church Rev Buch officiating. Burial at Concordia Cemetery.
The Forest Park Women's Club selects the six top spellers from each class for a contest. Winners receive prizes at a program in the Municipal building on Friday evening, November 5th, with judging by a committee of club members.
