Sears Roebuck and Co opens a new Forest Park store at 7221 7225 Madison Street in Chicago suburb, third west of the Loop, with easy access from Madison surface lines and nearby Harlem avenue routes. The store offers tires, radios, appliances, household goods, sporting gear, and more on a redesigned first floor and basement. Executives W H Alexander and M C Pentisoff attend the opening as locals join Sears expansion in the Forest Park trade area.
Forest Park Kiwanis Club received thanks from Proviso Township High School Board for aiding the Madison street paving project west of the Des Plaines River. The board announced bids would open Friday September 7 for paving in front of the school, clearing the way to finish the stretch from the river to First Avenue in Maywood. The letter, read at the club meeting, praised the Kiwanis for civic spirit and urged completion. The event included tributes to a departed member and reports on district convention activities.
Forest Park council sets November date for incinerator bonds vote after state law requires longer notice. Ordinances authorizing the election were read and laid over under council rules. Next week actions proceed to finalize the timing and notice.
Madison Street in Bellwood faces closure as the Indiana Belt Line elevates tracks. Forest Park officials Mayer Gold and Albert Hall join Maywood River Forest and other suburbs in opposing the plan, with hearings set in Springfield then Chicago. Forest Park Eagles held a large Thursday meeting at the lodge hall on Dewplaines Avenue and Randolph Street. About 50 attendees saw eight men initiated and heard an address by John S. Parry, with Jamce O'Keefe and a sizable delegation from Garfeld Arie, Chicago. Former head Charles Hasty attended for the first time in eleven years. The group voted to enter a float in Monday night’s parade and perform Wednesday night, urging members to arrive early. Parry extolled the Fraternal Order of Eagles as a rapidly growing North American fraternity promoting companionship, mutual benefit, patriotism, and humane goals beyond wealth.
Roosevelt Road business houses show co operation and sharp methods in the Greater Forest Park celebration. They distributed coupons, hosted two banco parties for the benefit, and made a generous donation toward the fundraising effort.
Emil L. Buechler a notable Forest Park businessman died Friday September 27 after three months illness. Born April 9 1877 in Cleveland he moved with family to Chicago and later San Francisco before returning to Illinois. Survived by wife Helen Denehy daughter Helen Marie and siblings. funeral held at Zmmerman’s chapel with Knights Templar and Forest Park Masonic rites.
A. Whippet coach and a Ford truck collided at Thomas avenue and Lexington street around 4:30 Thursday afternoon. Both vehicles overturned with serious injuries to occupants. Mrs Axers Smith and her daughter rode in the car from Chicago. the truck belonged to American Cleaners of Oak Park. Mel Sadth and daughter were en route to visit the Moore family on Thomas avenue. The southbound car and eastbound truck collided after blame alternated between the occupants.
Max Goldstein of Parkside Clothiers presents a window display tracing wool from sheep to finished garment. The exhibit uses pictures and real wool to illustrate each stage and show modern machinery used in cloth production.
Jamie Heron, noted Scotch poet and entertainer, headlined the Lions Club gathering on Thursday noon. A second speaker followed, delivering remarks that energized members and highlighted club activities.
Forest Park plans a week of gala events to celebrate a near million dollar improvement. Mayor George R. Gold will switch on the new lighting at 7 PM Monday, followed by a parade along Roosevelt road and Madison Street with decorated cars, banners, and a ribbon-cutting. A second parade will run Wednesday evening through Forest Park and neighboring villages Oak Park, River Forest and Maywood. Stores stay open nightly to 10 PM and merchants offer souvenirs and bargains. The week ends with a 10:30 PM Saturday ceremony at the Hanehah and Madison corner for the DeSeta automobile prize.
The Community Sunday Evening Club at Forest Park's Community Methodist Church will begin Sunday evening, October 27, with a musical program under Ro$ Crossley, choir leader, as part of a non sectarian series expanding last year's Sunday Evening Forum. Meetings start 7 45 pm, last one hour fifteen minutes, including a pre event community sing.
DeCelles Co is landscaping the Andrews property area on Madison Street between Elgin and Harters avenues. The lot has been leveled and covered with black soil. Procal improvement exists nearby. the project is in early stages as plans for the frontage remain undecided. DeCelles also works on Sheridan Drive in Chicago, featuring bas relief design set back on the lot for distinctive decoration.
