After a three month illness Alonzo Cary the last Civil War veteran in Forest Park died March 21 1927 at his son Frank W Cary's home on Thomas Avenue He was born January 29 1845 in Preble County Ohio enlisted in the Union Army Sthlig Cavalry and fought in many battles wounded and imprisoned he escaped with help from African Americans Cary was descended from Scottish settlers and Mayflower ancestors He lived in Richmond Indiana Rome Georgia Chicago and finally made his home with his son He leaves a half brother and half sister Funeral services were held at Blatter's Chapel with members of Old Glory Post G A R and other groups acting as pallbearers Interment at Waldheim.
